I've got one too, brilliant for towing, I had a Disco for a while and didn't like that - bought the Paj back! It is thirsty though, but I haven't had any problems getting spare parts.
Think the imports are more expensive to insure. We looked at one years ago and some insurers wouldnt insure it as it was an import.
Weve just bought a Shogun Sport, love love love it. Friend has one and reckons he gets about 28 to 30 to the gallon. They tow a 510 with it and reckon its great.
Even though they are imports i think they are the same as the mitsubishi shogun, not 100% sure though. Japanese cars tend to be reliable but when they break parts tend to be more expensive than some other models - at least that's what my dad always told me.
I have a 2.5 manual short wheel base import Pajero I love it. Get spares from www.milneroffroad.com reasonable price and very helpful. I insure mine with Tesco's fully comp £180 I am over 40 though
My sister was insured with Quinn, she said she found them really good to deal with when the car got written off by a man in a van and it was all sorted pretty quick. I had never heard of them either until then.
We have a shogun (british version) and it is fab for towing.
As others have said Imports can be more expensive to insure and if you are under 25 you won't get insured at all.

My friend has one, I agree they are juicy but good towers, her gasket went on it... I think it was that lol, but they fixed it fine and hers is a japanese import.
Yep, we bought a LWB diesel Pajero on eBay about 5 months ago. Didn't have any problem insuring it even though being a Pajero it is the Japanese version of the Shogun. Ours is an import complete with its full Japanese service history! Well, I think that's what it is!!! Don't know what our insurance is for it but it's less than £300 p.a. TPFT. I just typed it into one of those price comparisson sites for motor insurance and picked the best deal with the best package.
No problems whatsoever getting parts for it either. Pajeros are very common in UK and parts are widely available. Some parts are interchangeable with the Shoguns whilst others are specific to the Pajero. But no problem sourcing bits and pieced for them IME.
We really like ours. We've got 4 children aged under 10, so it's handy having the extra fold down seats in the back for when we all go out together and need the extra room. It's fairly expensive to run but for us with such a big family our other car is a Ford Galaxy which is also a heavy old lump to drive around - so we're damned which ever vehicle we drive in our family. Cheap just isn't an option.
PS: The gasket has just gone on ours too - so maybe something to check when you look tomorrow. Check for any oil leaks. My husband is a agric mechanic and is going to fit new a gasket kit for £70'ish. So not too bad.
I used to have a 2.8 turbo diesel LWB Pajero years ago. It was a great tow vehicle but, as others have said, it was very expensive to run; even in comparison to my Range Rover Tdi
.
Parts weren't particularly expensive from what I recall and insurance was not expensive either. Pajeros generally have a higher spec than the Shogun and yet they are generally cheaper, so I'd always choose a Pajero over a Shogun.
My criticism of them is that they are awfully tinny compared to RRs. I had mine for about a year and then got rid and got a new Discovery; had it for a few months and then went back to the good old RRs again.
If you are moving up from a little car then I don't know if you can appreciate just how expensive they are to run - think long and hard about whether you are happy to pay this price, before you invest in this hard earned cash for the Pajero.
