Feeling a bit confused, lunged my horse on monday and he was doing the wheel of death for the first 10 mins or so, his groundwork is terrible due to bad handling previously so was expecting him to be full of it and trying everything in his power to avoid work and to get away from me, but was concerned at how much he stood on his hind hooves in canter, he was really stomping on himself and almost falling in at times but we worked through it and he came good, problem being in the morning his legs where filled, which isn't unusal as they often do fill overnight if he's in but two days later they are still big around the fetlock so I brought him in last night as his paddock is now trashed due to the weather and washed the mud away and was shocked at how much heat was in the joint, especially his previously injured leg, I thought maybe mud fever had started again and others agreed but I've had a real dig around,(well as much as he will allow), and cant find any scabbing at all he is just really sore. He seemed happier this morning after a night clayed up and the heat was practically gone. I'm just thinking maybe it isn't mud fever at all, maybe he is just bruised from being a numpty on the lunge and jumping on himself,(he has managed to chip a huge chunk of hoof away), or does mud fever ever present without scabbing and it is indeed mudfever? Any advise/ideas would be much appriciated.
