What’s you opinion on mixing tack colours? The thing is I got a new saddle this week that’s black (I wasn’t worried about the colour as had an absolute nightmare getting Bodey a saddle that fits). My others saddles were brown. So tomorrow I’m going XC in brown bridle and black saddle, is this the ultimate sin???

Oh and just to add Bodey is now in an extra, extra wide saddle, the widest we could get! So he better not grow anymore otherwise I’m stuffed!

If your just going cross country schooling or taking him for a blast around I wouldn't worry about it, it's no biggie.
But for a competition or show then yes, it would count as a sin!

Well it’s a XC clinic, so not a comp but not just playing either. But hey, my bum covers most of the saddle so maybe no one will notice, he, he!

Wise words! Even if the saddle is so wide I could only just get it in the tack locker of the box. I think I own a hippo not a horse!

I have a brown dressage saddle, black jump saddle black bridles and my dressage black bridle has a brown drop noseband on and I compete in all the tack it will be fine no one will notice

I take Hattie everywhere including hunting in a black bridle, brown breastplate and brown saddle.
For showing I put Gypsy's brown bridle on.
I will get her a black saddle as soon as I can afford one.

My saddle, bridle and girth are all black - but my stirrup leathers are brown!

There is a story behind it. When I had my previous horse, Mickey, his saddle was havanna/orange (

) and Mum bought me leathers to match. When I got Ellie, there was no way she was having any colour saddle but black (to complement her lovely red coat) but I loved my leathers so much, I wanted to keep them - and they were discontinued. So we bought some black leather dye and dyed them, but instead of going black they just went a very dark havanna - and they look lovely on my saddle! I competed for years with this combination

I don't really worry about it to be honest - as long as it fits my horse and is safe and does the job it needs to, then that is far more important than what colour it is

Depends on the brown but unless its really light I doubt people will notice. Daisy will be going schooling tomorrow sporting a rather funky mohican as I've run out of time to hog her so I wouldn't worry about it. Even if the odd snobby person does think something you'll soon show them when they see Bodey jump. Have a nice time.

Nah! I think it only matters if you are showing at top county/Hoys level. Otherwise as everyone else says as long as it fits it doesnt matter!

I had the same problem when getting Inca a saddle - I ended up having one made to measure as she is so wide and with no withers

. They (Stubben) still use her as an example when people phone up to ask if they can make a saddle to fit wide horses - it was the widest they had ever made and no one could believe it was for a little 15hh cob!!!

Oh Slinkyunicorn, nice to know I’m not the only one! I have been really worrying over this whole saddle issue. Bodey is like a table top, so flat with no wither. Once he has completely finished growing (thinking when he is 7) I’m defiantly going to look into getting one made for him.
I still can’t believe how much he has filled out over the last 2.5 years, I really didn’t think he would get this wide!

Funnily enough it is the coloured coblet in my avatar!!

The best thing about having it made (not the cost!!) is that 8 years on it still fits perfectly even with weight loss and muscle gain. It has never moved an inch and is so comfy - often do 3+ hour hacks in it!

The previous saddle was only ever temporary but it didn't matter what saddle pad etc I used it always moved - usually sideways due to lack of withers!!

ETA - Inca was 6 when I had hers made.

Oh so yours was made by Stubben? I’m defiantly going to look into it! I think it would be so worth the investment (probably cost more then I did to buy Bodey in the first place). Bodey has just turned 6. Inca looks very similar to Bodey, cobs hey, who would have them? Well me! Big thank you!

I did that bought a black saddle and had all brown tack, but it was such a bargain. Have to admit bought a cheapy black bridle for dressage, which is surprisingly nice!

It was
smile.gif
- it just happened that when I did all my research into the best saddle etc for her it just seemed like the best option - they fit it to their rib cage which is why it never moves (probably haven't explained that properly!

) They fitted the saddle to me first so I could have the one that fitted me best and then it was fitted to Inca - is also in lovely black to match the hooligan!!
tongue.gif
- they also made it with longer dressage flaps etc so its comfy for me and the hoodlum!! Was definately worth the money - and definately cost more than she did - she is on permanent loan from a rescue!!

Well, I know a cob that makes it to HOYS every year - he wears a black hunter bridle and a brown WH saddle. If it does for him then it'll do for me!

I have never worried about matching tack but then have only competed at local level and pony club stuff. Tack is too expensive (for me!) to be replacing stuff unnecessarily just because of colour!

I love Havanna tack, but I got the chance to buy the saddle of my lifetime (a WOW) at an incredible price, but it was black. So I just bought a cheap black bridle for showing and look after it carefully to keep it looking nice. I use my good Havanna Jeffries for dressage and everyday.

Flynn has all black tack but the big mare (who has so much more of it) has black bridle, black dressage saddle with brown girth, havana breastplate and oak bark jumping saddle with a black stud guard girth.

She has a matching brown bridle for her saddle but she uses a drop noseband and I haven't got one in the right colour . . .

When I bought Genie's saddler my saddle asked me over the phone what colour I wanted. I told him I'd prefer brown, but when it came down to it if it wasn't I'd just buy a fairly cheap black bridle. Easier to get the bridle in the right colour to match the saddle, than buying a saddle to match the bridle! You're not showing, so don't worry about it for now!

I have brown reins and market harborough with a black bridle and a very dark brown saddle

I don't think it looks that bad TBH.
