Hi,

This was mentioned in a post further down and I have been trying without success to rid mine of thrush and thought this might be worth a go.

How do I go about it? (sorry, probably dopey question but it's been a long day!)

Personally i dont know why sugar is mixed in because it feeds bacteria.

Iodine on its own would be better. Or have you tried teramycin spray from the vet?

Nettex do strong iodine , ask your local saddlery.

yes, I have tried teramycin but it hasn't touched it and he is really sore on them, I'm at my wits end. perhaps soaking a pad in iodine and leaving it on might help???

I have used this with great sucess to keep infection at bay and heal an open wound.

If you search 'sugardine' you should get all of it's potential uses.

I've never heard of it to be used for thrush, but it wouldn't surprise me!

I didn't know it was used for thrush, it's one of the best remedies for seedy toe, after years of research by the donkey sanctuary. I'm not sure of the quantities, but you need to add iodine to sugar until you have a thick paste, apply this to the area and bandage in place. I can't remember how long to leave it, but it should be repeated for about two weeks.

Or try Sudacrem. Clean around the frogs carefully with kitchen towel to remove all the dirt, apply Sudacrem liberally into the thrushy clefts.Apply every day until the thrush is gone. It's anti bacterial, works like magic and it's a lot cheaper than other stuff on the market.

Yes my vet said for thrush, wrap a great big load of sudocrem in the foot, leave and reapply everyother day. Unless horsey gets it off first! Said this would always be his first line of thrush attack!

I have used this in the past when I got a horse with horrendous thrush that was really deep in the cleft - worked well.... simply put some sugar in a cup or small bowl (start with just a small spoonful to begin with)... then start to add small amounts of iodine and mix until you get a paste... if you add too much iodine, you simply have to add a bit more sugar . then simply pack where it is needed.

remember though that you need to make sure that the foot and the cleft is cleaned properly before you pack it .... cleft best done with a syringe (without needle naturally!) and keep squirting with Iodine solution

I used peroxide for the first couple of days and then moved onto the sugardine.

works well! sugar will also slow down the growth of proud flesh. with thrush in feet make sure farrier has trimmed the frog well as the bugs live in the nooks and crannies! keep feet clean scrub out well with salt water or hibiscrub before putting sugar paste in, or peroxide and bandage or vet wrap the paste in overnight. try to keep in dry field, dry bed etc. good luck

To make sugardine, mix a povidone-iodine product - such as Betadine scrub, ... Apply sugardine daily until the thrush is gone and keep the horse's feet as dry as poss...

Just wanted to say that thrush is a fungal infection - not a bacteria, so anti-bacterials are not the thing required. That's not to say anything specific about iodine and sugar working/not working.

Purple spray does nothing for my horses thrush which has lead to abcesses recently.

I haven't done the sugar thing, but I have been cleaning with boiled water and hibiscrub then applying iodine which has cleared it up.

Stockholm tar is THE treatment for thrush.Pack out the cleft of the frog with cottonwool soaked it the tar, push it right in with a hoofpick.Paint the frog with a mixture of stockholm tar and enough veg oil to make it runny. There really is no better treatment, I cant understand people mucking about with purple spray ,etc. Paint your horses feet with stockholm tar and veg oil every few days and they will never get thrush.
