I have been trying to get hold of chopped straw bedding to bulk out my flax bed but I can't find anywhere in my area that sells it. I was wondering if regular straw would do the same job or would it just end up in a mess?
My mare is very wet and messy! She pees, poos and stands all in the same place! Her stable is large so I end up with a clean side and a dirty side! I've had her on just straw alone before but no matter how deep the bed was the wee kept running out underneath into the yard - not nice! Hence me using flax which is fine but it's more expensive and I have to use such alot to cope with the wee!

Help!

I do know people who put a flax / hemp or shavings base down to soak up wet and then a straw bed on top. You could managed this deep litter stylie and just take out the wet once a week and top up with a bag of flax at the same time...

I used to do this with one of my horses who was disgusting in the stable. It worked with him better than any other bedding I have tried.
I deep littered through the week and wet mucked on the weekend, a decent bedding of flax and then a decent layer of straw on top.

That's good to hear - I just didn't want to end up with a huge mess! I'll probably give it a try then!
Thanks
