My horse is currently on shavings, but I take out about a barrow-full a day because she wees so much  so its costing a lot to keep on shavings alone and I was wondering if anyone has ever mixed straw with shavings? (Not that pre-bought chopped mix stuff, I mean a bag of shavings and a bale of straw) and has it worked? I could put her straight on straw but shavings are a lot more absorbent and with my routine of mucking out I cant sweep it all back to let the floor dry in the day, she is put out in the morning then I muck out in the evening and put her straight in :o

Any suggestions appreciated :D

I had my boy on Shavings and was getting through a lot and was always removing sopping wet shavings on a daily basis.

The reason I put him on straw was £7.00 for a bale of shavings was getting Stupid when I could buy bales of straw for £1.60.

I left a thin layer of shaving under the straw to start with and am deep littering the straw but im now using about 2 sometimes 3 bales a week and his bed is always dry.

He loves his straw bed and is always lying down and loves to roll in the straw, where as I never noticed him lying down on the shavings. Im a complete convert.

It takes me 10 mins max to muck out its so easy but then its straw only and I don’t take the wet out. My bed is always dry.

i mix both ... my boy is very dirty but i cannot afford to keep him on shaings .. i put a bale of shavings down a week and straw on top !

the difference is amazing .. instead of taking 2-3 dirty wheelbarrows a day, i can deep later and skip out in the week and take the wet out at wkends ...

swear by it !!

Some of our boxes are bedmax and cardboard mixed together, with a bucket of wood pellets where they pee, and straw banks. The straw gives them something to pick at if they're on restricted hay.
