Does anyone have/use these? If so what sort of base do you stand them on and does it work well? Have you had any problems with local authority etc.

I am aware that if I construct a concrete base and erect stables my local authority will insist on planning permission. Also concious of the fact I will have to apply for change of use for the land. Currently exploring options. Never seen mobiles in action, have been told a stone base with rubber mats is good but worried that this type of base would not be good outside the boxes and get churned up?

Any hints greatly appreciated.
 
I have mobile stables, and we just have them on the grass with rubbermatting in, and they are fine!

We got them when we first bought our field before we got planning permission, the field is in green belt with some very, ahem difficult neightbours, planning wasn't an easy process. When we first moved the stables there we had a visit from the planning enforcement officer who said they we fine as they were moveable, we have moved them 3 times now, due to our uncanny ability to pick the only bit of the field that floods! and now we have had the permanent ones built they are down opposite them.

the best method I have found is cut the grass down really short, scalp it basically and then put a layer of shavings, I just used the stuff from the stables on the ground to level out any bumps then put the rubber matting down, my rubber mats curl up the wall as are to big and I think it must help with a bit of water tightness. in some the ground occasionally forms dips so I just lift the mat in question and lob some more shavings in!!

Outside, for 1st 6 months we had nothing but it got really muddy and horrible so we got rubber mats from KSM which look like a cobbled drive way but are really good, they are thick and non slip!

This is my 3rd year with them so far!

Thanks for that and very helpful. The mud outside the was something that concerned me (especially as I have always had a more traditional type yard with concrete etc), also have visions of the ground under the mats getting quite boggy and squelchy, my horses do spend quite a bit of time inside.

How do you stand with the planning officer if you dont actually move the stables at all? Trying to gather as much info before actually spending money on land to find I cant actually have stables! Have been given the name of a good local consultant so may speak with them too.
 
I use a mobile field stable for my horse on a permanent basis. It is from Lloyds Acre stables and is built onto steel skids so that it can be technically moved by a tractor - hence mobile.
My horse is in it every night as I use it as a stable. I put it on very level ground and just popped heavey mats in with a thick rubber strip nailed around the inside bottom edge...this helps keep the mats in place and keeps the draughts out. I then put a normal bed of shavings in with banks and it has been fab for the last 3 winters and summers.
I do have a few problems with mud in the doorway in the winter but it is manageable...just a pain. I cannot put anything down to prevent this as I rent the field from a farmer and promised not to put anything permanent down.
From a planning point of view you cannot put any sort og hardcore or concrete down inside as this is classed as a base and hence you need pp.
 
Be very careful, as some plannng officers don't regard "mobile" shelters or stables as non-permanent buildings. Our local planning officer is very helpful, but they have cracked down on mobile shelters.

Is there a website for KSM? Are they the honeycomb type rubber matting?? What do you put on top of the mat?? Sorry for so many questions

) digging out the front of the Field Shelter, and then very reluctantly at great expense, putting down said honeycomb type mats .... tomorrows job is to put a layer of wood chip on top. My hands are so very sore, as it has been blowing a North East gale (my FS faces North

There is the link to the rubber mats, they do do equestrian tiles too but we have used the amentie ones for outside, as they are pourous, i.e. drain, and are completely non slip, my naughty horses has galloped over them a few times!! you can glue them together but we never bothered and they haven't moved, we drive cars and tractors over them and they are fine, it is just like having springy concrete!! my farrier loved it when we got them, no more mud!!!! there was no digging just put them on top of the grass!!!

I am in a horrible area for planning, and have a very unhelpful planning office, but our very helpful planning enforement officer said they were ok and there had been no sucessful test case for getting mobile stables removed so most councils will tend not to want to spend a load of money on it!!

When we bought our land, I was told, no planning would be granted for anything, I had my first set of planning refused but now have 2 permanent stables on concrete, hay store and tack room, and 3 mobile stables and tack room, and a school, it was a bit of a fight but worth it!!

My usage of the temp stables is every night plus days in bad weather, and they coped with a 6 month box rest just fine!

Thanks for the reminder, had heard that depending upon where you are differenct authorities have different views on the term "mobile". Will be giving my planning office a call after the holiday to put out some feelers.

Interesting how well the mobile system with rubber mats seems to be especially with heavy useage. Definitely worth more investigation I think.
