Mobile stables

I was wondering what you all think of mobile stables/field shelters i have a good piece of land and am starting from scratch. The field has good natural shelter from all sides but i would like to have a stable. would anyone recomend a mobile stable? what floor would you use? do you think it should go in the field or just outside? Or would a permant stable be better with a concrete base? thank you for your advise

People in general opt for mobile field chelters because they can't get planning for stables (mobile field shelters cannot have a harcore floor and need to be moved very often). If you opt for stables you will need planning permission, a concrete base and then the stables of your choice (you might want to think about water and electricity while you are doing all this).

if you cant get planing permission the best thing you can do is get a shelter which is mobile and put slip rails across to keep horse in

We have both mobile stables and mobile field shelters. As a previous poster says you cannot put down any hardcore or stone chippings or concrete/tarmac with mobile units. I just have rubber mats down and then my beds. Outside I have some wood bark chip to help with any mud. I just didn't want the expense of going through planning although I am sure I would get permission and I didn't intend on wintering the horses on this land, but changed my mind.
I am really pleased with mine. We built the shelters ourselves, but bought the stable block (3) secondhand

As has been said you will need planning permission for stables so field shelter may be your only option as some councils are declining permission for stables. As has been said field shelters don't need planning permission however they must be able to be moved & furthermore you must move them possibly every 6-8 weeks. Several horse owners have either been prosecuted or have had enforcement notices served by councils in the last few months regarding their 'field shelters' that are actually being treated as stables. This is because they are not being moved & having hardcore bases etc put down. I suppose they see it as flouting the planning laws?

Thank you for all your responses i would really like stables instead of field shelters does anyone know how long and how much planning permission usually is? yasandcrystal - if you don't mind me asking what type of bed do you put on the rubber mats?

Your local council should have most of that information on its website. They usually require plans of the stables, specification of the matrials they will be constructed from and a fee of a few hundred pounds (depends on the council but if you assume 300 pounds you won't be far off). They then generally take 8 weeks to make a decision.

However, it may be worth having an informal chat with your local planning officer as he may be able to suggest things they do and do not like and you can adjust your plans accordingly before you submit them.

Hi I have mobile shelter in quite a wet field but it is always dry as I have put it in a dry corner. I put Hemcore down but probably would use rubber matting if I was going to use it to stable overnight etc. Mine is a double Chart but we didnt put doors on(although I have them) I paid extra to have rain protective overhang on roof. I have never moved it at all.

Yes you need planning if you put a hardstanding down.
