Yeah, i think it's disgusting......... if they can't ride well enough to see a stride to that height then I think the IOC should put the fences down.

I doubt many of the competitors would profess to being good riders but to send them in tooled up with whips and spurs is cringworthy.

But what p*sses me off even more is the comentator blaming the 'dodgy' horses.

I am not liking the commentator either, who is calling them wonkey donkeys, horses that don't want to work and having temperament issues...

I really cringed at the guy who had no control of his lower legs and is wearing spus...
crazy.gif

The only guy that appears to be able to see a stride so far is the one that they said Show jumping is his weakest discipline
crazy.gif

I certainly wouldn't want to let any of mine be ridden by the bunch i've seen so far

sounds like they have an utterly rubbish rule

" 2 refusals and then move on to the next fence"

that just encourages them to be crap!

on the red button on the bbc!!

Just had someone that could ride and did a good job! Czech I think was too busy typing to make a note!

There was a horse a little while ago that jumped round and was being as honest as it was being allowed to be and the rider jabbed it in the mouth over ever fence so it started cat leaping instead with its head in the air and landing with its back legs in the fence... the commentator said the horse was dodgy

I think there should be a minimum standard of riding test before being allowed to compete personally!

Ive seen a horse than didn't complete with its first rider (and deemed as naughty) complete with it second rider, with a few problems but I wander if this rider had got to ride it first if there would have been any probelms!

Then a horse than went round with one fence down with its first rider, completely jack it with its second but then did complete...

and I can't believe they let that rider get back on that poor horse after that very heavy horse fall where it rolled completely over
crazy.gif

Its a very differcult thing to do but there has to be a minimum standard and horse welfare taken into consideration i feel

perhaps a change of rules somehow

Bit like some local BSJA competitions!!!

I would have thought they would have been OK riders to get to this level?

As much as they are not great (Not sure I could do any better on a strange horse) the horses do not seem to be "helping" the riders. Never seen this before and do not think much to it.

Agree the fences should perhaps be a bit lower!

Yes it reminds me of the local show jumping! I would have thought they would have been better to be at this level as well! Some of the early riders were shocking!

When I was younger i've competed in competitions where you ride a strange horse (usually out of the local riding school and certainly no where near this level and not jumping!) and you get 20 minutes to work it in and then go in and do a riding test and they were really hot on making sure the horses were happy and not ridden badly!

Just seen another horse that didn't go well at all with it first rider, get round with its second rider... i think that says alot about the riders personally.

Haven't watched it but used to know someone who was a reserve for the british team, he was very capable and won a lot BSJA so always had a huge advantage when riding.
The most successful ones tend to be Pony Club people who move on from tetrathlon.
I do feel sorry for the horses, they must wonder what the hell is going on with such mixed messages..

I agree with you there hh, someone with a background in SJ or PC would have an advanatge.

At last the commentator commented on the bad horsemanship of some riders...

I am glad it appears to be over... some of those rounds were terrifying to watch!!

I'm not usually particularly squeamish about these things but I agree with those who say it was both scary and unpleasant to watch - that poor chestnut horse who stopped at the 2nd with a Cuban and got beaten, then jabbed in the mouth over every fence, then got a sawing as a reward once it finished. Good on the little bay horse who jacked it owing to rider hanging on so tight to its mouth it couldn't jump - it was INCREDIBLY careful. I would be quite happy to see this sport dropped if this is the way it is - or just drop the riding and make it a modern tetrathlon.

If a horse lands on its neck, and the rider is pouring blood surely there should be a brief vet and doctor check?!

I'm certain there would have been in the eventing (regardless of the fact the rider wouldn't be allowed to get back on anyway).

Quite a shocker to watch, they all look slightly ex-racer ish.

I think that was the most shocking... a horse fall equals elimination in other disciplines surely it should be the same... that poor horse it landed on its neck and then rolled over and they let the guy get back on...

Ahh, thank godness I wasn't the only one watching with my mouth wide open! I nearly turned it off as I was screaming at the commentator and the appauling standard of most of the competitors - poor horses
frown.gif
it was such a relief to see a couple of the guys giving the horses their heads over the fences and actually seeing a stride!

Now I know they are multi discipline athletes but surely there should be a minimum standard for the riding i.e they should be able to - they aren't going to pick up a gun without knowing how to fire it, or run 3000m without doing the training so why is it any different with the SJ, esp where there are animals involved. How that horse didn't break it's neck falling like that....and to let him get back on

Lets hope the women fare a bit better.

Sorry, rant over! It has been bothering me all day and needed to get it off my chest!!
