In round figures, how much do you spend on your horse(s) per month?

I have one of p/livery and the other on grass. On top of the little extras I reckon I am paying out £550 per month. I initially budgeted for £200! Just goes to show how rubbish I am at budgeting! Would I have it any other way? No.

Vet fees this month are £400 – so all in all I am paying the best part of £1,000 for this month. Eeeeeeek!!!

Oh the horrible question that makes you face up to reality, I currently pay on average £700 a month for one horse and with entry fees this would shoot up a tad more! I used to have 2 and pay £200 a month for them both - oh the good old days eh!

About 6 months ago i was paying about £450 for one, including lessons, comps, farrier etc
But recently I have really been cutting down and it has all come down to about £300

I have cut down lessons to once and month tho and been turning out myself rather than paying yard to do it

We pay roughly £200 a month on 3 horses. That includes stable and field rent (we rent a small holding from a friend), 4 round bales of hay, feed and little extras that the horses "need". My partner trims our horses feet as they are barefoot, altough going to have to start getting a farrier out for my mare now

Although this months vet bill is the best part of £600 as had our boys 2 boys gelded last month

Used to have mine of full livery, which was about £100 a week. I didn't work out for me, because I was working all hours to keep him, and then I couldn't ride him.

Plans at the moment are to renovate my old stables at home, build some more and a sandschool and keep the horses we get at home.
Bit of a pipe dream at the moment, but it's looking more promising than ever before. Fingers crossed.
Which means I'll have no livery outgoings, just everything else.

Bank account tells a sorry tale...last month livery was about £15 less than our mortgage

And that's without the vet treatment, shoeing and dentist. Better not to look...

I am glad I am not the only one who is paying a fortune.

I have thought about renting a private yard but if I cannot make it down one night I have problems. It will most likely be that way because I work long hours some days and have to do networking evenings. I could do assisted DIY but then when you add it all up its near enough the same cost. Luckily my young boy is happy out 24/7 – I couldn’t afford two on f/l or p/l.

My OH says the cost is ridiculous – I agree but funnily enough I haven’t done anything about it (or intend to!)

I refuse to add it up or think about it to much! esp now I'm on a more expensive yard and paying for lessons, I'd say roughly £200pm+ lol even more when shoeing is due every other month

Excluding tack, rugs and insurance, an average of £40 per month for 5.

After reading the above posts I feel very lucky indeed! I used to pay £60 month livery (DIY), £12 hay/straw per month, plus extras eg vet, farrier. This was tight during the xmas period when she had 3 abcesses, vaccinations, worming, pregnancy scan, all tack etc (she came with nothing!). It's now May and I am finally straight with the vet!!! Moved her to my mums fields now where I pay zero £££, just have to keep field/fencing tidy etc. Stopped feeding hay, so just carrot/feed bills at the mo

A friend and work collegue is keeping her mare on full livery at £150 per week!!! We only take home £260 after tax/NI!!! Really don't know how she survives!!!! Debt upto her eyeballs me thinks

This is a terrifying post

. I'm £45 per week basic (my stable, my haylage and 2 bales of shavings), about £30-40 a month hard feed maybe (he inhales racehorse cubes and they don't come cheap!), shoes are about £70 a set at the moment with stud holes, and every show day is a minimum £30. Luckily been getting my lessons and the odd trip to shows in return for helping with the P2P horses which helps a lot and we've got a vet on-site which is a godsend for silly things like vaccinations and when he decided to burst his face open on a bank holiday Monday - reckon I'd have been about £50 for another vet just to get in the car to come to me! What's really terrifying is the fact that I'm about to take on a mortgage as of next week - how I'll afford the pony and the flat I'll never know - reckon I might have to get some extra work, start teaching again or something

Right now I'm paying *gulps* £650 per month for my horse to be on full livery to be broken in.

Fortunately, I only expect to have to pay this massive amount twice then she'll either go onto full livery if I sell the yearling or DIY if I don't

Feed, field, hay, straw, insurance, farrier etc for the other two is about £200 per month.

OMG! Some of you pay a fortune!!

My last livery bill was for 2 months, 2 horses, £350 inc hay and 1 stable is straw.

I love my cheap to keep ponies! They have the same basics in their feeds (Alfa A & TopSpec) with one getting conditioning flakes and one fibre beet in winter, plus adlib hay.

One is unshod, one is shod and goes 6-7 weeks.
