I'm sure this has been done a million times before ... but there is a recession, and I know I'm broke so what tips do people have??

My fav (I pinched this from a girl on another forum) is for a show shirt ...

Take one asda school shirt (approx £3), stick it in the wash with a yellow duster ... and hay presto it comes out cream and is lovely for showing!!!

Another one is take an old, faded riding hat - use dark tan boot polish to buff it up and there you have a dark brown hat perfect for showing classes (looks lovely with a brown tweed)

I've also become a 'Primarnie' fan .... leather gloves : £8 (again, great for shows)

Fly spray. Half and half vinegar and dettol. Care needed, can cause some scurf on sensitive horses if you soak them to the skin with it! Works better than any commercial one I know and smells gorgeously "medical"!

Saddle cloths - stretch fleece bought off the roll and cut to size. Washes beautifully and dries dead fast. Stretches so you don't need to worry about it being up in the arch at the wither. Great with a thin non-slip gelpad (geleze).

Poultices - babies disposable nappies and magnesium suplhate paste. MUCH more effective that "that brand" that makes everything it touches soggy.

Wound washing lotion. Buy 500ml of 100 vol (30%) Hydrogen Peroxide from a chemist/agricultural store and water it down by ten to 3%. Makes 5 litres for less than £5.

Hoof hardener. Buy agricultural formaldehyde (sheep footwash) which is 35% and water it down by four to about 8%. Almost identical to "that brand" and has the same effect in use.

Sweet itch lotion. Buy benzyl benzoate (cheap online) and water it down by 3, spray lightly every day on top of mane and tail. Makes 1.5 litres for about £7.

Warning NOT LEGAL to import, but big jars of Derbmobion/common animal antibiotics/Bute etc available online from the continent at a fraction of the price from a Vet. Cannot be recommeded of course.

Legal and dead cheap - horse wormers from Australia. The sell duo tapeworm/all-other-worm wormers with the same chemicals as in this country for less than £5 per 600kg horse INCLUDING the air freight costs!
