Some of you may remember I rescued Monty from a girl on the yard who said that if he survived the night, I could have him. Well, after being diagnosed with navicular and low ringbone and after 3 months box rest and 6 weeks turnout ... we had our first ride this morning

We were both very excited and he was as good as gold. Didnt know how to leg yield, wouldnt accept contact and wouldnt halt. We only went for 20 mins down the lane but he jogged and sweated up quite a bit with excitement. A bit short in the trot but thats understandable as he hasnt had anyone on his back for about 8 months.

Heres a piccy of him when I first took over ownership

Self indulgent I know, but had to share

Its quite a long story, but due to neglect (long time without food or water) he had major colic and the vets wanted to refer to hospital, but to cut a long story short, she wouldnt/couldnt cope and signed him over to me for £1. She bought him from auction as a 10 year old, but vets think he is between 18 and 20. He's 16.1hh bay TBx - the rest is unknown. Im trying to get him right so that I can find a new mummy or daddy for him, hopefully to stay on the yard.

Thanks everyone - feeling rather smug

The stuff on his back is where I treated his injuries from throwing himself around the stable. He was very depressed and covered in rainscald.

i'm glad you posted i was only thinking about the monty the other day wondering how he was getting on, did the owner move the other pony?

Yes! I remember him, and the rather awful circumstances he arrived in your care. He looks lovely - mine's a dark bay TBx and I have to say I have a very soft spot for them! Keep us all updated, please. Lucky lad.

Aww thanks girls. Its rather strange, my trainer tells me I have the most difficult horse on the yard (my mare). To me she is perfect. Today, Monty wouldnt take the bridle at first and began to mess about and my stomach started churning.

Isnt it strange how you have no qualms ahout riding your own horse, but get on another for the first time !

On our hack (6 of us), we were in front and I asked him to move over to let his stable mate come along side. He didnt have a clue.

Tell me - Monty is 18/20 - he has little schooling. Should I start him, or let him be a happy hacker? Although I think at least a leg yield is important in traffic.
