Monty Roberts at Myerscough

I used to go to Myerscough, saw him in 2005ish?

He was very good. Did work with one of the colleges horses, Tiny, who was a shire cross and terrified of being loaded.

He was good, but I thought his method was just common sense!

I went to a demo a few years ago, afraid I wasn't that impressed and I thought he was really rude at the book signing. I was a huge fan before this, have every book, but it really put me off him, he is just a showman like PP now. Having said that I thought Kelly was absolutely brilliant and she made it worth the money.

Went to see him on Friday night at Bishop Burton College and he was great. My friend from the yard took her horse Tyson who is difficult to load, very difficult. Well he was, it was magical to watch the horse go on the lorry so easily after all the problems his owner has had with him.

Monty's riding was very impressive for a man of 76, and the horse he was riding, Copy, was very well trained. He made it look so easy. It was a lovely evening out.

Kelly is also lovely, I spoke to her for ages and she was so helpful. Got her books now, just need "perfect partners" :D

I have seen him twice and have a ticket for Hartpury in a couple of weeks. Its a good night out and he is an excellent showman. Wish my horse was as obedient and light as Copy!!

If you had watched how copy was being worked in, you might not think he was so amazingly light. I saw Monty warming the horse up and he was happily jabbing it in the gob in the waiting area. He then went on to lecture the audience on how the western horses are ridden in such a light way and how english riders could learn a lot.

I enjoyed my evening, but it all gets a bit commercial for my liking. I didn't go expecting to see him do a western riding demo, to promote a company that does western experiences.

It was also a shame that Kelly was busy saying "ooh Monty you won't get this horse to walk on the tarpaulin..." when you knew he was going to be successful, because it's what he does. He gives the animals confidence and a firm hand and they quickly realise resistance is futile.

:eek::( Very disappointing to read. I've seen this a lot in western and in all types of horsemanship. I'm afraid jabbing in the mouth with the bit is one thing I find totally unacceptable except in emergency. As for part of training and preparation totally as unacceptable as rollkur to me.

I'm afraid these two comments don't make sense in the same sentence.
To me confidence doesn't go together with feeling resistance is futile.

The razz ma tazz (sp?) doesn't bother me so long as the message is good and many do enjoy it. I know it has become non pc to make money in and be proactive in getting your message out in horsemanship but to me it is preferable to some of the other approaches I've seen ie. rudeness, mockery and downright nastyness.

I agree

I have enjoyed both Monty and kelly demos, I wish I had just a fraction of their ability - oh well we can all strive to do better.

We saw Monty at Greenlands on 3rd October. This was my second visit to see the Monty/Kelly Roadshow. I thoroughly enjoyed both roadshows and Copy is wonderful.I saw him being warmed up and saw no yanking of his mouth at all. Enjoyed his demo's and the loading of previous non loaders. The highlight for me was when Monty handed over control to one owner with the intention of her walking it up the ramp and when he said go she unhooked the lead!! Hilarious and I bet she wont live that one down in a hurray!
I agree that most of what they do is pure common sense but its still good to see the look on owners faces when what was a huge problem is now not!
