Went to see Him last night and enjoyed seeing an expert at work.
The man is amazing ,how is he so fit at his age and with his background.I enjoyed watching the join up ,sorry kelly Marks is not the most sylish rider but you have to hand it to her American Pie is a well trainer horse and a happy picture.
I thought the dressage horse was extremely tense and I 'm sure Monty is trying to help her with this and wish them lots of luck but it wasn't good dressage.
Monty's reining horse was a joy to watch , trained to perfection and relaxed, well if he said sleep I think it would and immediatly return to work and attention, a lesson for us all.The loading was again very interesting and showed a true master at work.
I admire the man but he makes his skill and talent look so easy ,if only it was!

you've hit the nail on the head. he's a master horseman, plus a natural showman. a lot of what he does is NOT easy to learn and copy. i've seen him live twice, and both times his guinea-pig riders got bucked off and hurt, i think because he was pushing things for the sake of the 'show'.
if you've not read his books, they're very good. he has even successfully done advance and retreat with the wild deer near his place in the States. nothing as skittish as a wild deer! i admire him hugely, but i don't share the "anyone can do this with a round pen" attitude.
i also really worry about running a totally unfit young unbroken horse around for that long in small circles at trot and canter, but maybe that's just me! surely it must damage their tendons and ligaments?

Not much running around last night, not sure if the horse was broken as no backing done. There are a lot of novice people there with absolutely no idea and I hope they understand that he is a VERY skilled and experienced CALM man. The loading with an idiot ,as many of us are, could have spelt disaster but he was altra relaxed, a very talented and natural man.

I thought it was quite interesting, and also felt the dressage was not the best example, but yes the horse was extremely tense. It also seemed a little patronising too for the rider and what they were asking her to do. The horses were lovely though. A picture of health and very well trained! I felt the pace of the afternoon coukd have been improved though....Got bored every now and again......But also agree that there were some very novice people who will go out and buy a Dually halter and think they can solve every problem under the sun with it.

I was fortunate enough to get Tarquin accepted on the demo in Norfolk and it was amazing to watch Monty work with Mr T. I really enjoyed the night but after a long day of rushing and forth to get Mr T there and back to work I found my attention wandering slightly in some of the ridden work. Had to agree with everything he said about applying his theories to riding but as I said on AHHO what he was trying to get across is what we all should be doing anyway if we are being taught properly. I.e to ride from leg to hand and teach the horse to move away from the leg.
There were a lot of novicey people there and I took one with me and it is quite horrific to see what she is doing to her pony now at home. As with anything horsemanship comes from experience and a natural feel whether you claim to be NH or not.
