Hi, my mare finished her recent season about 10 days ago. We had a new mare move to our yard Thursday and ping my mare is back in season but really bad with it. She seems obsessed by this mare and squirts and squeals when she sees her. She is also a nightmare to bring in at present (which again only started Thursday). You can easily catch her but 9 times out of 10 as you approach the gate she will squel, throw a front leg at you, spin and go bucking across the field. And today turning her out she stamped her front feet at me, squealed and lashed at me with her front feet before then attempting to pin me against the gate which she didnt manage!! This is a nightmare, my usually sedate shire x has turned into a raging hormonal demon! The only good thing is she is still a dream to ride and handle on the yard, it is just when she is near this mare. Does anyone have any advice? I've got some NAF Oestress to see if that will help the situation.

Unfortunately other mares can bring a mare into season...how old is yours? My mare was on Oestress for some time and I'm convinced it helped her become less marey. She had had a foal so was more in tune with her hormones. You could speak to your Vet about Regumate, effectively putting her on the pill. I dont think its cheap though.

Her behaviour may settle down, the recent warm weather may have upset the hormones. As for the striking out, I would be carrying a small crop and give her a smack on the leg if she tries to get you. Me and my mare had one or two "disagreements" before she learned to respect me, it worked for us and she knows with my voice/tone now how far to push me.

Stroppy as she was she is my best friend now. Very loyal, I love mares.!

She is 7 and had a foal a few years back. I've started Oestress yesterday so will give that time to work hopefully. She only seems a nightmare for me bringing in - who'd have a mare! Got to love them
