So I've just had to ask a livery to leave ...(first time ever??)... and the main bone of contention was that she didn't seem to look after her horses (i.e. no farrier, dentist). I insisted she got the vet out but then no treatment followed and the fur on this horse is coming out in clumps. I just feel awful because I thought I could stick it out for the horses, but she just wouldn't follow the rules, pay (!!) and was starting to trash the place. I just worry now what the future holds for these horses. Why does the horsey world seem to attract these people??? Very sad. :( :( :(

could you pass on her name to the RSPCA? if they are clearly neglected they might step in. would at least make you feel as though you've done all you can for the horses x

Yeah i'm very tempted to do that although I've been put off a bit as people seem to think they're rubbish. She needs someone to MAKE her act though.

Unfortunately the RSPCA are not interested unless the animals are near dead!! Apologies to anyone who has had positive action by them, if you are concerned, the best people to contact are World Horse Welfare, they action very quivkly

How horrible & frustrating for you. Try not to feel guilty tho, if you'd let her stay free & can afford to lose income (which most yo's can't) its money that could go to another real charity. Hopefully her new yard will be as caring & she might get the hint.

Sorry to say it but it is full of these sorts!!! You are lucky you have only come across one.

As much as it hurts, stay in contact with said livery & find out where the horses have been moved to when she goes.
Also, list up all the neglect problems and issues and contact the BHS welfare dept, telling them all this - stating thats why you had to give her notice as you run a well presented and cared for yard & let them know where she has gone to.
They will act & inspect, they will also let you know they have done so.

Please dont ignore what the owner is doing & will continue to do so unless action is taken by someone.

Good luck :)

Yeah I get the impression she moves around quite alot. Its a terrible shame because they were really gorgeous horses. The kind that people would die to own. It makes me sooo cross.

Hate to say it, but the BHS welfare ppl were absolutely and utterly useless when I contacted them re a serious welfare issue - and they know me so it's not like they would've thought I was a nutter with an unfounded accusation :(

OP I feel your pain and I've had occasions when I simply have not been able to do anything to alter the way someone is looking after (or not) their horse. Can't really offer any advice, but can say I've been there :(

I'm never sure why people think that paying livery is optional? I've never phoned up Barclay card and said... look do you think you'd be able to wait until the end of next week as I'm having a tough month.

It's a shame because the other horses on my yard are really well looked after and I can't risk them catching something. It also reflects very badly because all the people that pop past are like... urm.. have you seeen the feet on that horse?
