Does anyone have any recommendations for riding schools around York/North York (I'm in strensall, near Huntington) willing to travel 30 minutes.

Looking for a yard that have a some more challenging horses, a relatively good sized arena, and a chance to compete (showjumping or cross country)

Good luck! I got so fed up trying to find that in the york area that in the end I just bought my own horse. The yorkshire riding centre used to do lessons on school horses but I think now you have to provide your own.

Wish I could afford horse, would make life so much easier. Yeah, they don't do lessons on school horses but don't think I could really afford those prices

What about looking for a horse to share and then paying a freelance instructor to come and give you lessons? May work out more fulfilling in the long term.

I've considered that, however, it'll still be more then lessons and I don't have that much time on my hands, as I'm still at schools doing my GCSEs! Plus, I had one but it has shattered my confidence

Hi

I can really recommend Snainton Riding Centre. Snainton is approximately 40 mins from York heading towards the coast.

The horses and ponies are incredibly well cared for and most importantly happy. The staff are really friendly and the teaching of a high standard. They hold a number of competitions for every standard of rider. This is fantastic opportunity for kids that don't own their own ponies to compete. Its such a nice sight seeing these kids get a buzz from competing. Competition days are great fun relaxed and again friendly.

It is also possible to sit BHS and Pony club exams and attend clinics

Outdoor and indoor arena and plenty of hacking

The Centres Pony club is friendly. A number of liveries with really friendly owners also.

More importantly there is a warm clients room with refreshments for us mums to use whilst waiting! !

Its a real family business and they care for their animals as well loved pets.

My daughters love going. Its quite a distance from our home but well worth the drive.

Friars Hill Stables is about the same distance away from York as Snainton, but near Pickering rather than towards the cost. They have a lot of clients from York/even further afield - when I rode there (I've since moved away) one girl came from near Selby every weekend! They have a good selection of horses that are capable of more advanced work and really competent instructors, as well as two large indoor arenas. They also very often have jumps up in the field outside. They regularly run showjumping and dressage competitions, which you can enter on a school horse. They also run clinics and there's a cross-country course relatively nearby that they sometimes run trips to. Plus the hacking is excellent!
