This is the 3rd time since I got her in March! Never known a horse to get injured so much :p

Went down to see Ethel yesterday, Had a peep at her and thought it was odd she was just standing in the field not eating, but thought she was just dozing so mucked her out then went to poo pick. I called her over and she took one step towards me, well I say step, one HOP towards me and then stopped. So I ran and got her headcollar and brought her in, very slowly, and washed off her legs to try and find what was wrong. Found a small lump on one of her legs which I was sure wasn't there yesterday and thought that was the culprit so went and got some help as wasn't sure what to do. Friend came and we noticed blood on the floor where she was standing so took off her rug and found this ...

It's high up on the inside of her leg, so not too sure how she got it but think it might have been from a kick. Gave it a clean and attacked it with wound powder and an experienced person from work has said he'd put her on box rest for 5 days, with norodine and bute. So I've kept her in, she's had her bute and is feeling a bit happier but still lame in walk and her leg is very swollen and sore. The vet is out at work tomorrow and I have text him to ask him to take a look at her so hopefully I'm doing it all right, have just trusted the person from work as he's dealt with much worse injuries and knows what he's doing.

We were meant to go on a hack on Sunday with my friend, but I very much doubt that will happen now .. Hey-ho! That's horses for you!

Poor girl. Maybe she secretly doesn't like going out and looks for excuses to stay in her box.

Does she lie down in the field ever? She could have caught herself getting up if it's were I think it is.

Mmmm TBH that could have done with vet for stitches or staples, and the quicker thats done the better. Will probaly need antibiotics aswell and a flush out as expect its a dirty wound if a kick!

It probably could have been sutured but I wouldnt worry about that now. Is that not the outside of the limb? Which leg? Definitely get the vet to have a look if shes as sore as you are saying. Also, throw away your wound powder - its terrible for wounds! The only thing thats worse is purple spray. Invest in some Flamazine, Activon Manuka honey or (possibly) one of those natural wound creams eg botanica or that guernsey one.
I would clip the area around the wound(allows you to clean it better) and flush it out with plenty of salt water (or a hose if thats easier). I agree with your experienced friend - Norodine for 5 days and some bute (probably will only need 2 days or so though). It should start granulating in within the next 5 days then you can start turning out. If its well covered by the rug and shes not too big a fan of rolling I would just turn her out for 1/2hr in the school or small paddock while you are mucking out each day.
Hope shes doing better soon.

I have some other random POM wound cream left by my vet. Can't think what it's called. Seems to work though. Probably the same thing but in horse packaging instead of human. Probably costs twice as much too!

Vet has been today and said it wouldn't have needed sticthes or stapling, and to turn her out, keep it clean and cold hose the leg. Also said to keep on Norodine and keep giving bute until Saturday, and that if the swelling has gone down a bit by Sunday then a hack would do the world of good :)

glenruby - No, it's her off fore on the inside of her leg. A friend has mentioned manuka honey so will try and get hold of some of that asap. Didn't know wound powder was so bad, was told to put it on :o It's useless anyway .. the puffer thing is blocked and now i can't use it very well :p

jess - She does lie down quite a lot in the field, so I guess she could have done it getting up or going down.

I turned her out once the vet had left, so that she got an hour or two out, and had to duck as she got so excited at being let out after two days that she exploded and I had hooves VERY close to my face! She was happy though, happy enough to try and beat her field mate up, who is far too soft and just bit her bum lol :p
