I have cut and paste an email i had - i checked and the petition does exist. Not sure about whether the Government are trying to keep it a secret though!
Sign if you want to.

There is currently an online petition for more bridleways. However, it is being kept quiet (I think the Government hope people wont find it and sign it so they don’t have to do anything about it....). However, Endurance GB have discovered it and published the link in their UK newsletter. It has been spotted and we thought we ought to do something about getting more people to sign it.

I have some details below, which are copied from the EGB magazine:

"The Government is under pressure from riding groups to equal the number of bridleways in the country (currently approx 20,000 miles) up to the same level as footpaths (approx 91,000) miles to help reduce horses on the road/accidents while promoting outdoor activity and safe use of the countryside for all sexes and ages.
This will only happen if people sign the online petition. Please go to http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/15341 to sign and help get riders equal rights to walkers/ramblers"
Increase Public Bridleways to equal Public Footpaths - e-petitions

To acitively promote and encourage the development of new public bridleways for the safe off road use of mainly horse riders, but also cyclist and pedestrians. Currently the national network of public rights of way consists of 91,000 miles footpath; but only 20,000 miles of bridleway, 2,300 miles...

Once you have signed you will get an email and you have to follow the link to confirm other wise you're signature won't be added

Although lucky enough to have more near me now than ever before, I have signed this as I think its well worth it, there are so many places we could be riding if this is supported :)

The powers that be should sort out the existing bridleways first.....they've actually put "footpath" markers on one of our bridleways!! I've still signed tho :-) xx
