So I found a driver for SoE, after my trainer decided to break her leg xc schooling. (Talk about inconsiderate!) We stabled the night before and one rider informed me the ground was like concrete and she wouldn't be running xc. Set off at 6.30 for an 8.12 dressage.. groan.
Dressage was a bit inattentive, he had a minor strop just before we went in but the trot work was quite pleasing, no idea what our score was though. I wasn't thrilled but wasn't cross either.
SJ, warmed up beautifully, although I have noticed over the past few weeks (or rather since the vet ok'ed us to continue after a virus..) he's not quite as keen (I'm talking very subtle though). Went in and I saw a deepish stride to fence 1, cue crashing and demolishing, ok so perhaps I let him bowl round the corner a bit. He then jumped 1 and 2 a little stiffly, I saw a perfect stride to 3, good rhythm and well balanced, and we, er, fell through it, pretty much onto the floor. Oh.. I decided to retire at that point, he's cut his hock and his knee and ripped his over reach boot to shreds and something definitely isn't right. It wasn't a big track and shouldn't have been a problem really. We're worried he hasn't recovered fully from the virus last month, but the signs 99% of the time are so subtle, he's so genuine and will happily still pull all the way round the xc. So as he has nothing prove and we've had a great season we've decided to call it quits for this year. Would've been better to end on a good note but not fair to continue as he's been ever so slightly under par for a few weeks. I'm kicking myself for not taking more note of any signs but he went so well at Spring Hill, (despite looking rubbish on paper!!) I thought he was back to normal.
Hope to be back fighting fit next season though and I'm hoping he won't be fazed by today. Thanks for reading and Ferd is now happily tucked up in bed with haylage, looking happy as larry to be on holiday!
