I know lots of people ask about food for their dogs so here is another one....

Chimo - a British inuit has had problems with her poo since we had her. She is fine most of the time, but is very prone to tummy upsets and very soft poo (think Mr whippy ice cream!) She has been to the vets and they have even tested her as they were worried about her pancreas (sp?) but that is all fine.

She is currently eating the James wellbeloved wheat free one (Turkey and veg), but has regular treats - like denta sticks and markies. She can be fine with her poo for ages, and then she will be bad.

is there any benfit of actually feeding that particular one as it is very expensive - about £32 for 10k. would she be ok just having a good quality "regular" food. She used to be on Royal Canin - for large breeds (there was a pic of a GSD on the front) but had the same amount of tummy troubles then as she does now.

I wanted to stick with a adult food as opposed to large / small one as we also have a JRT and they always eat each others food. the JRT is fine on any food.

I live in Guernsey and dont get all the brands that they have in the UK, i can't usually order off the internet as it is too heavy to post.

Thanks for reading this far and sorry for the ramblings! all your help is appreciated!

I feed Autarky which is healthy and wheat free and has sorted out various problems with our 5 dogs.......but....I order it online

I had this problem with my dog, we tried Supadog Sensitive its not too expensive, and gluten free. Never had a problem since - lovely firm stools with not much odour .. hurrah!

Have you tried not giving her any of the treats?

I suspect my dog has a Wheat Allergy, so he is on a Hypoallergenic dog food. Before that he would go through periods of upset stomachs (exactly as you describe with your dog).

By giving her these treats her diet is no longer wheat-free, therefore that could be what is causing the upset stomach. My Dog only gets the occassional treat with wheat in, I try to avoid them, but most dog biscuits etc contain them unfortunately.

I have no experiance of this, but you could try feeding raw. Might suit her digestion better, and you could get it from the Butcher etc. There are lots of lovely Raw Experts on here that would be much more use than I am though!

I had someone from Oscars round today. You cannot buy their products in store but they do deliver free of charge. She spent alot of time time seeing what my fussy lab would eat and has offered me a money back guarantee if he doesn't eat it. Seems like a very good high quality food and the customer service so far sems excellent.

Try Arden Grange, I think they do a sensitive food for dogs. It's quite pricy but I think you pay for what you get, to be honest. You can get it from the vet or if you go into Gaudion's they can order it for you. My dogs look fab on it .... give it a go!

My puppy has had the same sorts of problems, she was on JWB too I've just changed her to Burns and she seems better so far and the wind has eased up (thank heavens!!!!!) It's still expensive though!

I use Arden Grange hypoallergenic, green bag , quite dear, but it seems to be the best so far that we have tried.
If my boy eats anything apart from his 'normal' diet, including sheep poo

he gets the runs.
He gets treats very, very occasionally and when he does, it is usually hot dog sausages cut up.

Henry was on Arden Grange but it didn't seem to suit him so now he is on Iams which seems to have helped a bit. Think it's all down to what suits each dog although the vet said that Arden Grange is one of the blandest foods you can get so might help?

I do wonder if the horse poo component in his diet is the main problem with Henry...

You could try a raw diet - plenty of bone would soon make her poo's more solid

KarynK on here does that and I do and Severmiles (who also has British Innuits) so advice is around if you want it!

To be honest - those treats are prob full of rubbish - even if the JWB is ok... So maybe give her treats like a big bone to gnaw on (fresh raw bone, not smoked) or tripe sticks (if you can bear the smell!).

Raw diet is quite easy - once you get into it I find it much easier than feeding dog food. but having said that, there are the odd occasionas where I feed dog food (eg. if am away for weekend) and then i would give mine naturediet or natures harvest.

I always hear that Burns does a good quality dry food that was good for sensitivities? Or some dogs with sensitive tummies are good on chappie (no idea why having seen the ingredients!).

Hope you get it sorted

Thanks for all your replies, i would like to feed raw, but dont really have the time/space or acess to raw food. i have asked at the butchers before and they were not keen!

I will try and cut out the treats. she does like tripe sticks even thought they stink!

Think i will give the Arden grange food a try,

Thanks again

PM if you want to try some before you buy and I'll give you some of mine to try .... remember to introduce the new food gradually, over 7/10 days, especially if she has a bit of a runny bum!

Firstly, ditch the treats completely, especially those dentastick things. We have Siberian Huskies and we have to watch what we feed them. They are all on Royal Canin 4300 (you can't buy it in shops - is a very high energy food) and then the sensible in Summer when they aren't working (too hot!!). The sensible one might be worth a try. Check how much you are feeding as well. Ours get less than recommended otherwise they get the runs. They have different metaoblism to other breeds (I'm thinking Inuits might be similar) and need less food but very good food. If you want to give treats then ask your butcher for some bones. Not the big knuckle cow leg bones, but the rib ones. Feed them raw (never, ever cooked) and you'll soon see the poo dry up. You can always tell after ours have had bones, it's like picking up pebbles! Definately ditch those treats!!!!!! No point feeding good quality food then ruining it with those nasty things. The one time I tried dentasticks (xmas prezzie for dogs from a relative) they ALL got Mr Whippy.

PS Feed the bones after food not before as they go through the dog more slowly. Or feed at another time of day.
