Need some ideas please peeps!

When out doing dressage we constantly get the remark on sheets "requires more jump in the canter".

The FC bless him can get 8/9's for his walk & trot work but then slips down in the canter marks. His one downfall in life is that he is quite straight hocked but hey ho we can't have everything perfect & it doesn't stop him being a pingy pony so we can live with it!:)

Over the years the canter has got loads better from doing lots of walk to canter & 10m circle work to get the inside hind to work through.

Anyone got any other exercises/training ideas we can work on to improve the canter paces & make it to have more lift or will I just have to accept that's how we are??

Thanks :)

Having written today those very words in that cases the judge meant the canter was a little to slow and earth bound. Maybe up it a notch in power to create more jump.

PS. Despite what you think that was a very reasonable score ;-)

R gets this comment all the time, we've worked on it by really riding the outside aids...leg and hand, making sure his head is in line with his chest and using circles to get his legs much more under him

i always tend to end up with horse/ponies with a rubbish canter
so have had loads of excersizes to do

walk to canter as your doing and counter canter can help

you can do a turn about the forhand then straight into canter on the new rein at the moment the new inside hindleg comes under on the last step of TAF
so right rein in walk turn on forhand pushing Q's left then on the last stride when the left hind leg is stepping across ask for canter

cantering a square and doing a quarter piroette (sp  ) on the corners some times adds more lift

canter a 3 loop serpintine doing a 10m circle at each loop then canter - walk - walk - canter to change leads across the center line , R crashed into fence a few times trying this ;)

canter down C line doing a 10m circle right at D the walk-canter left at X and 10m circle left at G

canter down C line and do 10m circles in the corners , so go down C line on left rein right to G and circle left then go straight on and circle left (10m) in next corner then straight down C line and same at the other end of arena , so your doing a 10m circle towards the fence in each corner , sorry thats a tricky one to explain without a piece of paper

trot a 10m circle then ask for canter on the last stride towards the fence (don't jump it though ;) ) this can help them back of and lift instead of going to fwd in the canter

trot a 10m circle in the middle of the arena so on the quarter line , so if you draw it on paper you have 5m each side of your circle (hope that makes sense)
then leg yeild IN to the circle and ask for canter towards the fence
so trot a 10m circle on left rein in middle of arena take an outside flexion - leg yeild in then turn right towards fence and ask for canter

and rein back then fwd straight into canter

that should keep you busy :)

Lots and lots of counter canter :) counter canter and almost think half pass to the track to really push the quarters and shoulders across but keeping the rhythm and "sit" in the canter. Lots of forward and back on a circle too :) Very envious of you getting 8's and 9's though, impressive!!

Cheers sometimes if I think of asking for a bit too much power I will lose the front end but will ask for more!

HUGE help AH many thanks and you are the dressage diva :D Going to print your instructions out and try them on paper first but see exactly where you are coming from! Will report back on the progress. Cheers :)

Good ideas thanks KB I'm off to perfect the counter canter and hopefully we will see an improvement.

An exercise from you know who - he who must be obeyed.

Canter Diamonds using the outside aids then switch to circles and back again.
Also shoulder in on circle to canter. Shallow loops in trot to counter canter as you come back to the track.

Looked like a damn good score to me missus ;)

I get the same comment in canter all the time too! Will try some of the suggestions. My pony finds 4-time canter easier than 3-time - eek!
