More over the back needed

do you use a pessoa - they are great for getting the horse to work better over its back.

Also doing 'long and low' work is good too - but make sure the hind legs still stay active. Lots of transitions will help this within the pace and up and down the paces. Along with circles, lots of changes of rein/bend whilst getting your horse to stretch down and forwards into the contact. You should be able to feel it swinging through its back.

thank you, yes I do use a pessoa once or twice a week.

I normally work Axey long and low in walk and trot for a good 10 mins when I first get on him, and do lots of transitions etc but at the comp on sunday I felt he was a bit too spooky in the warm up to let him have a stretch down, so I didn't do it!

Ha ha that will teach me

Now he's actually listening to me and not arguing all the time, I can do a lot more 'proper' schooling with him. Up until recently he's been going round totally hollow

and its been all I can do to get him to go in a vague outline.

Hi there

When a dressage sheet has "work more over their back" on it, it can be several things going wrong. The most common is the horse not holding himself in self-carrige, and is just setting himself agains you hand and hollowing his back. In order to correct this, lunging with side reins between the horses legs to get him to stretch down over his back is a great way to improve the back shape, and just keep working on your dressage tequniqe.

Hope this helps, pm me if you need any more help.
