Hi chaps,

Just wondering if any of you wonderfully insightful chaps had any advice for me.

Barnes' housetraining has been going really well and last night he once again went all the way through without any accidents, even on the paper. However, after he'd been let out and done all his business and had a good explore in the garden I went up to get ready for work and when I came down he'd wee'd on the rug on the sofa.

This isn't the first time, he also did it on Sunday when we went out after he'd been with us all day and he did it yesterday while I was at work.

I've thought about it being separation anxiety but he hasn't displayed any such problems before.

Any ideas on whats causing this and more over how to put a stop to it would be fab. I can't keep washing the sofa covers, they'll fall apart!!!!!

Thanks in advance peeps,

H x

He might be worried about being left? Not sure...

My pup did have one accident on the rug when he was little - never any other incidents. It was the first time he had seen it and we think it reminded him of grass

Anyway - you need to make sure you clean it up really well - so the smell doesn't linger (think using some white vinegar with water does the trick) and the puppy doesn't then go on the same place.

Also - you could maybe give him a kong filled with food before you leave - so he associates you leaving with a good experience. And you could try leaving and coming back really soon a few times... so he doesn't anticipate being left for long?

Ah looked at your posts history so i suspect he's about 5 months?

I too have a JRT and he's one now. He is very good and is almost 100% toilet trained. he still doesn't ask to go out but sits by the door and waits! He had odd accidents especially in other people's houses (excitement and i even take him for good walk before hand) but other wise is very good in my house and is crate trained. In fact i am making a gate to kitchen so i can leave him loose when i am out. I still don't trust him on my sofa (it's brand new), it'll probably take me 5 years before i let him loose around my house unsupervised. LOL.

Boris isn't bothered about being left. but he looks disapointed when i put him in kitchen with chews and toys then went out but when i come home he was all wriggly, happy to see me and i give him his bis. He didn't touch his chews but looked sleepy so i suspect he was asleep when i am out.

Good luck with yours..

Actually good point sevenoceans - I didn't let mine in the lounge unsupervised until I was sure we wouldn't have any sitting on sofas or accidents!

That way - when he started weeing that one time I could intercept him and he didn't do it again.

He was only allowed int he kitchen when we were out - then I let him have the kitchen hall and dining room (gate blocking stairs and lounge door shut) - now he has the whole downstairs and we don't need the gate to stop him going upstairs cos he knows he isn't allowed..

Thanks for your replies.

He has just never been bothered about being left so I really am sure its not that???

What did annoy me this morning was that he had just been given a chewy and I'd only gone upstairs so no excuse really!

He is contained in one room when were out, but unfortunately it has to be the living room as this is the only place we could fit a baby gate (our house is a really old cottage with odd shapes etc).

I've got some enzyme stuff which neutralises the smell and stops them going back to the same spot. Also just a thought but is your puppy's base the kitchen? (or in fact one room?) I read somewhere that dogs see their main living area as their "kennel", whether it's a whole room or just a crate. So once they are out of their "kennel", anywhere is fair game for a wee. Obviously the idea is to keep them contained, but the message is don't turn your back when they're out of their own space! If that makes sense?

my pup is roughly same age, bit younger i think, im loosing track.

i dont let him be anywhere unsupervised really. if i'm going out or for a long bath he goes in his crate.

to be fair he has had hardly any accidents - but thats because he doesnt really get any oppurtunity to, i let him out constantly.

i went to the shops for 15 minutes the other day and didnt crate him i was dreading coming back and finding the house a mess but he was still sitting exactly where i left him !!

i would suggest perhaps crate training might help? it seems to have really helped me and my puppy. he also see's it as his place of safety if he were to get frightened.
