I posted a while ago asking about the possibility of breeding from my mare. I have been doing alot of reading and, although alot of the stallions suggested were lovely, I am worried about size.

There seems to be conflicting opinions about size of stallion/mare limiting foal size etc, however I am thinking that it is just not worth the risk.

My mare is only 14.3 and is an argentine tb so is very fine.

Soooo.............
1) What would you suggest as a maximum size stallion for her?
2) Are there any nice small stallions around?
3) It occurred to me that, while I was looking at heavier stallions at first I completely discounted arabs. A friend of mine has a beautiful anglo-arab. Would this be a silly idea?

Don't worry, alot of thought is going in. I sound like a novice since I am when it comes to breeding but i will only go ahead if I am totally sure of everything!

Thanks

I looked into buying a 13h Section B mare, but as soon as I was told she was in foal to Donnersohn I steered well clear. The mare was so slight I would have died of stress worrying whether the foaling would be ok!!

I know that Morgan Stud actively promote their 16.1h stallion Donnersohn for pony mares and they give a concession for anything under 13.2h.

Would be interested to know if there is a maximum stallion/minimum mare size for future info!

I don't know if it's any help, but as a general rule of thumb my Dad always used to say within 2 hands. He used to breed hunters, mainly using old HIS stallions on part bred mares, but I always stuck to it when I was looking for stallions for my own mare. Really it's a matter of common sense to avoid putting something with a lot of bone on a very fine mare........

The only thing that would put me off breeding her to an Arab stallion would be the projected size of the offspring. There aren't many 16hh Arab stallions about (assuming you want a taller horse?).

If she were mine and I was planning to breed her then I would be looking for a TB or lighter WB stallion around the 16hh-16.1hh size.

Is she registered? This might make a difference on what you choose to breed her to so that the offspring can also be registered.

Hi checkout this stallion www.wolkenderry.co.uk he is stunning, elegant and not too big (short coupled too). Saw him at Burghley last year, he looked amazing and was really well behaved in what was a huge ring surrounded by hundreds of people!

Given her background it's also possible she's not truly expressing her genetics and may throw much larger than you'd think. I've seen this happen with mares that raced a lot or had poor nutrition or were ill at a crucial point in their development (or had a foal at 2, in one case . . ) and it seemed to "short circuit" their growth.

You could go for a pony, hoping the offspring stays under height but then it's not a horse for you.

She's not THAT small and you could certainly go with a decent sized stallion, with a reputation for adding height, and reasonably hope for something larger. The bigger question, of course, is what you want to end up with. If you ended up with a taller version of her but no other "improvements" would that fit the bill?
