So I was wondering if I should get a turnout sheet for my new cob. Shes on permanent loan and I only got her 2 months ago so I dont know how she'll be in the winter. If she is clipped this year she'll only have a trace or bib clip at most. I was thinking of a no neck 0g turnout sheet. I have one for my other boy and it's a lifesaver with the terrible irish weather. She has quite a fine coat at the moment. Am I just being a sissy or do you reckon she would benefit from one?

It is always handy to have one, even if you don't use it all the time. And if you want to ride regularly then wearing a turnout rug when the ground is wet and muddy will save you a lot of grooming time!

I know some people love them but I am not a fan of rain sheets. I found before when it DID rain for a while the sheets would just soak through and stay wet on them. there were also studies done that showed that horses couldn't keep themselves as warm with them because their hair was flattened. I do use them in warmer no rainy weather just to save grooming time before riding, but I never use them if I know there's going to be much rain.

I agree. I have 50g rugs instead which seem to keep them warm and dry in foul weather. I have them for my unrugged ponies just in case and and they get used rarely, but I’d hate to not have one if needed.

I use a no fill if it's warm but wet e.g. yesterday. I have also used them to keep the mud off of greys in warmer weather if I am turning out but want to ride later and it's been raining (so it a bit muddy).

50g seem to be getting easier to find which is good because I find them very handy. As other posters have said, they keep horses drier and warmer.

Shires fit native ponies well. I dont use rain sheets either except in summer as the old girl shivers if it is cold wet and windy in summer. In winter she grows a coat like a polar bear so needs medium heavy weight or she feels the cold not sure why

Agree with the other posters here about the 50g rugs!

Also agree Rambos and Shires are excellent brands. I haven't got a 50g in those as ones with shoulder gussets are better for my Irish cob.

I have a Gallop 50g which I bought as a spare but is actually a really good fit for him so I've been using it a lot. It's a nice light weight. He doesn't live out though so it hasn't had much wear and tear yet.

I also bought a Weatherbeeta Comfitec last winter. I've not used it yet but it feels a bit heavier as its 1200 denier, so will keep more warmth in and rain out. I'm hoping this will be his main rug for the winter!

I have a couple of 50g Shires and they fit my chunky mare well. I also have a Ruggles one which is a good fit (they are really helpful if you email them about sizing).

I have a 40g with detachable neck, Premier Equine, it's 1680d so everything - proof (including cobs who rub their bums on things!!)
Just snagged a WB 50g without neck which I haven't used yet, its 1200D so fingers crossed. My cob is a HW show cob and they both fit him well, the WB is better on the chest but there's more depth to the PE.

I've just got a 50g shires combo for £50 for my connie. He will be living out this winter and the rain sheets just don't stand up to several days of wet weather! If you are only getting one rug, and have the money to spend, then my Rambo is the best rug I've ever bought.
