I advertised a 4yr old just backed and riding out - unfortunately a put a very "alluring" photo in the ad and I was innundated with enquiries (should be a good thing I hear you all saying !) However from around 50 phone calls I have had 7 people come and look (he never put a foot wrong with any of them) but only 2 of then could actually ride!?! I had 3 people phone and say "please don't sell him to anyone else" but I never heard from them again and I had 3 people say they were bringing a horsebox to take him away following viewing - but I had to explain that if I wasn't happy with the way they rode then he would be staying at home.

I have had several dealers contact me claiming he is over priced and offering me less money (you would have to spend a similar amount of money to buy a foal for goodness sake!)

I had one that booked a 5 stage vetting, so I booked a school, a stable and a day off work ... just to have her cancel the night before ... BUT she forgot to cancel the vet - I hope she got a bill he travelled for about 2 hours. I have turned the horse away for the winter and I am still getting enquiries but I have really run out of time and energy.

Is horse selling always this miserable

Ergh poor you.

But you had to book a 4 year old a day off work?! I'm not criticising the work your horse is in - just shocked/sympathetic for you for having to stick to such a strict routine!
 
seems to be the norm am afraid,many many yrs ago i advertised my lad as a lunged only 3 yr old tb...and you wouldnt believe the amount of phonecalls i got asking if he was a novice ride???wtf?(fortunately telling off from mum at the time made me keep him

My sister had exactly the same problem. It clearly stated in the advertisment for an experienced rider interested in dressage/flat work. So what does she get? A dozen people all straight out of pony club, dieing to jump 4ft. ???

Good luck - maybe give it a break and try again in the spring/summer when there will be a wider range of people looking for horses - often in the winter its the children looking for ponies for christmas!

I had increased the price - for just the reason you stated - then reduced it again - I only bought him as a companion and I never expected hm to turn out so well - he ought to go jumping and he is 16hh so (I would have thought) an ideal size - if I had the time I would keep him as he is wasted here doing nothing!

I even had one person who said "buying horses is soo difficult - I can't think of anything else..." WELL - I can!
