Hi

I will be purchasing my first horse early next year - a dream finally come true at age 55 years young !! I'm hoping to be able to pick up loads of tips and trade secrets on the forum to help me along the way. Really looking forward to it :)

hi Dougal and welcome :)
how wonderful for you that you can fulfill a dream at last, it's never too late to own a horse! i was 43 when i got mine, any idea what sort you will be aiming for or have you already got tabs on one? hope you enjoy the forum

Hi there - his name is Dougal, and he is a 15.3hh piebald cob aged 9 years old. Totally bomb proof, can jump/xc/hack and has gone up to elementary dressage (I'm currently at intro still !!) I was going to put this in a different post, but now that you are here - he is my riding school horse, I have been riding him for several months now and we have a good bond/trust between us. However, I do keep being advised by others not to buy him because 'he is just a riding school horse', do you think I am being naive and should look around.... I think he/we have potential and he is forward to ride when I am on him. Why do some people look down their noses at ex-riding school horses - I just don't get it ....

buy him, he sounds fab, you could search for years to find another that you click with, he's a good age, good height and sounds like he can multi task very well! i don't get the ex riding school thing either except sometimes they have been badly ridden, treated and can be a bit reluctant to hack alone, if Dougal ticks all your boxes don't listen to anybody else, your journey with him could be a long one and if he is the horse for you it will be an amazing partnership. Every person i spoke to told me not to buy an Arab as i would be on the ground more than in the saddle but i knew my boy was the only horse for me and ignored them!

Thank you so much that is really encouraging. He has never been badly ridden and has been well cared for - he is used for the RDA club because of his temperament. I normally trust my instinct with all our animals and its never let me down yet, so I'm going to go with it again this time. I have looked at others, but they are not Dougal and when I look at them all I can see/feel is him ....
