Moser Avalon battery problems?

I bought a set of Moser Avalon clippers about 3 years ago - they are the cordless ones with the battery pack.

I have done perhaps 6 clips with them in that time - only 2 of them full clips but now it seems that the battery no longer holds it charge. That wasn't an issue for me as I just plugged them into the mains while clipping but I bought a new set of more powerful clippers and was hoping to sell the Moser's but having looked around it's about £80 for a new battery which by the time I paid for it wouldn't be worth me selling them as I was only looking to sell them for about £70!

Does anyone know if it might be possible to get a similar battery that was cheaper and not branded as a moser battery? I'm assuming that some of the kit used to build these clippers must be used elsewhere and were not made specifically for the clipper battery pack?
 
Hi, the battery pack is stuffed full of AA batteries, I'll double check when I get to work but I'm pretty sure.

If you are descent with a soldering iron, insulation tape and a drimmel you could replace all the batteries in them but you would have to make sure you got he correct type. When I get to work I'll take one apart and let you know some proper details.

Having said that, its not my recommendation! I'm sure you can find them for less than £65! Also, with a new battery, I would start bidding at £90, postage £10. I'll get back to you!

Inside you have 15 rechargeable AA Nickel–metal hydride batteries which are soldered together in series with tin foil.

You scratch the surface of each terminal with a drimmel or sandpaper to roughen up the surfaces so solder will stick.

Batteries capacity are measured in mAH (mili amp hours), the higher this number the better. 1800 mAH batteries are fitted but you can find higher mAH batteries on ebay for quite cheap. If you can get hold of them they will last longer (clipping) when you do wire them up. We bought 3000mAH and use them all the time in trimmers etc when they come in for repair.

In conclusion, if you did want to attempt to replace the batteries, you will need 15 NiMh Rechargeable AA batteries with 1800mAh or higher and wire them up in series - job's a gooden.

I have a battery stripped ready for exactly this treatment! I bought new one anyway so I always had a spare and five minutes into my clip the ruddy clippers died.
 
A tip or two if you're going to try this.

1.Draw a diagram on paper. The batteries are all in series, if that enough info for you then that's all good. If not, draw a diagram.

2. Get some of that foamy double sided tape and lay the batteries out on that so they do less moving. Bring the soldering iron to the batteries, not vise versa.

3. Cut up some old wire from somewhere, (you're replacing what is essentially tin foil so most wire from an old cable should do) strip off the insulation and then strip the insulation off the remaining strands, soak the wire in solder and cut into lengths about 1/2 an inch and then solder them. Trying to solder bear copper is harder than soldering solder soaked copper.

4. Don't spend too long trying to solder one spot...you may knacker the battery. If your solder is not sticking, remove the heat, sand the terminal and try again.

I work for Shear Ease and we replace the batteries in small trimmers like this all the time, we have never done a big battery pack though, but its the same meat, same gravy, just eating a whole cow instead of just a cut of sirloin.... do excuse me...I've suddenly come over starving...

Please say PMSL is referring to my craving for a juicy sirloin and not the fact that I repair rechargeable clippers....Its a shame... I went to the fridge and there was half a block of moldy, hardened cheese and half a tin of dog food... not quite what I had in mind, anyway, the dog didn't mind going hungry till I went shopping.....
