Took Jacob Marley (aka. jakey 4yr old pure percheron) on his first Hack yesterday and what a star! He's been broken to drive for just over 2 months now but only been ridden for 2 weeks. Wednesday because one of our other horses is a bit sore he jakey had to do carriage rides but it was country skills day on the estate so he had to compete with, BBQ, sheep sheering, cars in weird places, tree felling (with things falling from trees,) cables across paths and 4 marquees, one of which kept trying to take off. He didn't bat an eyelid! The head went up and one step was taken in the wrong direction when smoke blew in his face but that was it! I defy people to find another 4 yr old who spent his first 3 years bombing around a field with 30 other younsters to be so calm!
Then yesterday he went on his first hack. Ok, we had a few stearing problems so we kept his liverpool on for an attempet at a fulmer effect but he walked past men at work signs and the tractor was topping in the field making one hell of a noise. We also saw lots of people and dogs and we went through the most inviting grass track that even got the 19yr old shire a little worked up and he didn't even try to speed his walk! then on the way home he managed his first trot! He was a little confused about my rising and ran out of steam half way but my god what a little star!
Sorry for the post but so please with him just hope his younger brother is going to be the same and that this isn't the calm before the storm!
 
Ahh what a star! he sounds like a lovely boy.

He sounds lovely and I do love the heavies, though as folks know me will tell you, for me it has to be a one eyed old clydie as the best heavy in the world.

Sure his brother will be as good.
