Today was the Vodacom Durban July, effectively the biggest race in South Africa.

Pocket Power, last year's Horse of the Year, was favoured to win. He is the most incredible horse and I've liked him since his first days on the track (kind of have to; he belongs to a friend of mine). However, I also really liked this pretty grey filly, Dancers Daughter. Everyone thought I was crazy because she isn't very well known and is-heaven forbid- a filly.

So the race began with my loyalty and money split between the greatest horse in the country and a little grey filly. Pocket Power was every inch the champion looking comfortable to win when out of the pack burst beautiful Dancer's Daughter, like a bird and challenged him neck and neck to the finish. I nearly went into cardiac arrest. The race went to a photo finish and was declared a dead heat!

I am so lucky and what a fantastic filly. Serves all my chauvinist friends right. I am writing this in a floor length silk gown, with a glass of champagne in hand. I apologise for the narrative tone- I think I'm tipsy.

Must have been a terrific race to watch. Must admit I don't see much by the way of Southern Hemisphere racing, being more of a jumps fan.
Please don't send your horses over here; look what the Springboks do to us on a regular basis!

Thanks for the report
