Most comfortable girth for a very sensitive pony?

Maybe?

Hey All, as the title really.

I have a exmoor type mare who suffers from a bit of sweet itch during the summer meaning that she has a sensitive tummy (she wears a boett and has no visible skin irritation or hair loss, but just gets slightly girthy) I currently use an aerborn humane girth which has started to fall apart so I am looking to upgrade.. what would you all recommend?

Thanks :)

Said pony looking uncharacteristically angelic!

I too use a sheepskin girth cover for a sensitive horse. You can still get humane girths if you want one But many competition venues and affiliated societies have banned them on safety grounds - there is no redundant strap, if one side buckle breaks the whole girth goes. Personally I prefer double elasticated girths - with elastic both sides. But you do have to be careful not to over tighten.

shires do a fabric, sheepskin backed girth, elasticated at both ends and with a handy D ring in the middle. Other than my lovely leather barnsby girth, these are my favourite choice - I just bought a new one from Barnstormers for £28 :)

Thank you all, I shall take a look.. I would just get a sheepskin cover but she hates them! :)

That's really interesting Shay. I've always been really careful with mine only to tighten it Unmounted in case I were to drop a strap but I didn't realise
They had been banned in some places. She's been completed BD and pony club in it and it's never been picked up on (I've just checked and they're definitely banned in pc!!) Maybe I aught to get this new one sooner rather than later. :p

Have you tried a Stubben string girth? I know that's been successful for some with sensitive ponies.

On a side note, it might be worth looking into diet for the sweetitch - I believe there has been increasing anecdotal evidence that treating as if IR can reduce sweet itch symptoms. Certainly worked with mine :)

Would agree with all of this.

Re the stubben girth, it has long split ends so that the girth can 'settle' around the pony. Your pony may like this as she's happy in a humane-type.

I shall look in to it, thanks. I've never used a string girth before. (Re the sweetitch stuff, we already do :) last summer was the first that she could live outdoors 24/7 without trashing her rugs and not a sore or rubbed mane in sight.)

:D
