Our trailer is off having his brakes done. The chap has just called to discuss various things with D (I'm doing my 'I'm poorly bit' at the moment  ), anyhoo, he says that the Government is going to bring in an MOT test for trailers...

Whilst I think it's a good idea, as I am sure many trailers are out there and are not in the best of health (a very scary thought), I am wondering how it is going to be policed.

Hm. More food for thought

I know that many European countries do have this requirement so I suppose this is why we will be following.

I do think it is a good idea for trailers over a certain age. I have my trailer serviced and "MOT'd every other year so I know that the brakes, tyres and floor etc are in good order.

You do see some death traps out there.

As far as policing it, I assume that there will be stop checks at random by the police and maybe some insurance companies will ask to see if before issuing insurance so they know the trailer is roadworthy and less of a potential claim to them.

Is definitely being proposed, I would think it'll be initially brought in for larger trailers and subsequently for little ones.

Have to say I think it's a very good idea. We went to Newbury Show yesterday and followed a smart looking green Range Rover towing a heap of a trailer with a small black and white mane'd pony in it (could just see its ears and poll). It had no nearside reflector, looked absolutely filthy - you could see where the cord from the open back had sung along the bodywork and cleaned a half moon below. What was worse was when they pulled up at the lights to turn left not only did the left indicator not work but nor did the brake lights! Accident waiting to happen!

OH is an old-school mechanic and he's (embarassingly) critical of the state of other peoples lorries/trailers, the lack of cleanliness / cracks on tyres winds him up no end, and as he says if it isn't cleaned when was the last time they checked the tyres? Amazing when you consider how much people spend on their horse that they're not prepared to do a few basics before they take them out in a trailer. (Ours is the shiny silver IW everyone thinks is brand new but gets confused because it's an old model BTW! :D )

Yes, I live in Belgium and trailers here have to have their own number plate and yearly MOT. They check brakes and lights etc then you are issued with a sticker to affix to the rear of the trailer, which features the reg number and the date of sticker issue. The authorities send you a card about 3 weeks before the MOT is due, and you have to go to the MOT place (centralised as opposed to garage as in UK) with the trailer andall the documentation, before the sticker expires.
