I ordered in 4 large round bales of hay for the Winter. Three of them are fabulous and smell amazing. One of them however is very badly coated with mould/dust the whole way round the centre . On opening, it would seem its not just the outer layer as expected, its continuing through and through. My hay man has no qualms about replacing however I do have a problem. The bales are offloaded on the yard and then must be rolled on their side into the barn as no vehicle could access the area where they're kept, ie tractors/trailer. How on earth do I get the thing out given its been opened?! The only thing I can think is lots of twine tied round it. Any ideas?!

Thanks :)

Have you spoken to them? I'm guessing they probably won't want it back if it's mouldy. They will probably bring you a replacement and leave you to dispose of the mouldy bale.

Oh you'll have a seriously hard time trying to tie up a round bale once it's been opened, especially if you don't have a tractor with spike on it to move it once you've wrapped it back up. I think the only way you're going to be able to do this is to disassemble the bale and take it out in stages.

If you have a trailer with a ramp, it is possible to load a heavy round 4x4 bale single handed.

Disconnect the trailer from the vehicle, apply the trailer brake or chock the wheels, let down the ramp, take a long rope and tie it around the bale at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock (if you see what I mean!). Run the rope over the front of the trailer, tie to the ball hitch of your vehicle and gently drive off. It helps to have someone guiding the bale on but I've loaded lots without. Once you get the knack it is quick and easy. You'll have to load the loose stuff by hand.

The local farmer I buy off is convinced I just roll them up the ramp, single handed, and I'm not telling!

But, as others have said, they won't want it back.

They may want it back to throw into cattle to pick through.

I have moved a rotten bale by tipping it on a blue tarp and pulling the tarp into the yard, does need a few people to do it.

Ooh interesting ideas! He may well not want it back, the only thing that could be done with it is thrown out for cattle. Would perhaps be better if he didn't as could roll out back and burn.

Liking the tarpaulin idea... That could maybe work! Couldn't tow it out as its very much rolled off the yard and put in at a right angle to the area. If tying up is the only option, anything wider than baler twine we could maybe use?
