Any mould spores in your horses bed could get into his lungs and cause irreversable damage, the farmer should know this.

Definitely don't use it, get it from somewhere else if you can. You can usually tell a bad bale as it will smell damp even if it appears dry.

I remember finding mould in my horses bankings and I went straight to the YO and made them take the whole lot out, disinfect the stable and put a whole new bed in.

Do you arrange the straw or does the YO. Either way one of you has to tell the farmer of the problem & the fact that you're not prepared to use mouldy/musty hay in your stable. I expect he charges the same for a crap bale as a good one.

If you don't tell the farmer he will keep bringing you crap. I was offered free hay for my horse by a farmer, it was all the crap, basically sweepings from the barn. Most farmers haven't got a clue about horses & their welfare needs which are totally different from the normal livestock. This needs sorting out.

I agreed with my supplier that I could return any duff bales of straw. However, it is since they have been at my yard that they have been ruined.

YO pointed to a corner of the barn where I could store mine and failed to tell me about roof leak above - reckon I have lost half of my winter's supply!
