I have a rising 4 yr old mare BWB who is expecting her first foal in June. She is kept out (her choice) and has gone through 4 non-heavy weight turnout rugs, she hates having them on and rubs against anything she can find until the rug is ripped to bits. I also found that she was sweating sometimes with them on. So now she has been out in all this snow without a rug on and is as happy as a woolly bunny can be.
When I visited her yesturday afternoon, I gave her a good scratch (she loves that) and I was shocked to see loads of hair coming off as is she was moulting ready for summer!

Has anyone else had this? And is this a sign for an illness or something?

Oh and she does'nt suffer from sweet itch in case you think it's that.

Any help would be great, Thanks

She'll have inbuilt central heating with foalie on board so she's obviously cosy enough!

The days lengthening are starting the coats coming out - my nearly yearling is the same - there was clouds of it coming out of her yesterday. Just the time of year so don't worry!

our youngsters who live out have loose hairs about them,it is triggered not by the temperature but the daylight hours.

Thank you so much for putting my mind at rest. As she is the first horse I've owned that's never needed/wanted a rug on through winter I didnt know any different.

So this means summer is coming then???

Here's hoping we get one this year hey!

Three of the horses on our yard have started moulting properly, handfuls of hair coming out!
Yep, summer's on the way

Just back in from the stable from spending ages grooming my two, both of their coats are falling out like its summer tomorrow! Its a bit strange for them as usually still trying to pull the hair out in June! and we live in the very north or Scotland with loads of snow at the moment!

Hoping its a sign of a good summer ahead!

My 23 yo mare (unclipped) has started to lose her coat. This happens around this time each year, irrespective of the weather!

This brings me to another question now.

Do we molly coddle (dunno how you spell that) our equines too much then (with rugs etc), if they're telling us they are too hot!???

I see loads of Shetlands, Cobs, Section A's etc in fileds with rugs on from late Oct. I thought these were the toughest of tough breeds and bred to cope with harsh weather.

Our 18yo cob has been living out all winter with a LW rug, and he started moulting a few weeks ago, so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

My mare has been shedding her winter coat since Christmas. Infact, all of my horses are now moulting. As cold as it is, they have clearly noticed the lengthening days and associate it with summer approaching.

Don't worry, my 26 year old has been moulting since the first week of January. She is a bit weird - moults until July, has a full summer coat for about 3 weeks then starts growing her winter woolies again. She is never the same colour from one year to the next either!

My horse has been moulting for a week now.

He will moult until July, have a summer coat for 4-6 weeks and then get out his winter woolies.

He is native though.
