been wondering about this for a while as i have a welsh section d whos comfirmation and welshyness is very correct and how it should be as ive heard many people comment about the modern welsh and that my pony is just like the old fashioned build and his sire is three time royal welsh champion and does very well in the show ring although im yet to do any mountain and moorland classes as my pony has a hogged mane as his mane doesnt grow properly as it should and so its best for him to be hogged, and i dont know if hogged manes are aloud in these types of classes.

sorry if this is a bit confusing :)

M&M's are shown in a natural state, hogging is not acceptable for any reason, if you want to show him why not try and grow it out even a sparse uneven mane is better than none, otherwise you will just have to forget about showing him for now.

IMHO, it is rare that a Section D will excel in both hogged cob classes and M&M classes as both require different movement types etc. For example I am not a massive fan of seeing a cob go 'welshy' in the movement and I do not like to see high knees on a cob as one has to remember these types should give a comfortable days hunting for a gentleman. Where as the M&M classes seem to adore the exceptionally high stepping knee action these days, giving an often uncomfortable and bouncy ride. It's sad as just 10 years ago (maybe longer actually, time runs away with me) the movement of both M&M and cobs wouldn't have been too dissimilar - still different but not miles apart as now - but alas fashion continues to ride over 'true to type'.

As be positive has said, if you fancy a go at them, let his mane grow out, although in my experience after a mane has been hogged it just never quite sits well again but I would expect you to have to miss at least the next showing season to get sufficient growth. I would seriously advise investing in a hood to keep it flat though and expect to go through that 'OH MY GOD IT LOOKS HORRENDOUS' stage for at least 2-3 months :)

thanks for replying although I did start growing it out for about 9 months but he started rubbing it and it didn't really work as he was hogged at his old home and so I don't think the mane will ever really recover from it unfortunately although he did look cute with a little forelock :) although many have said how he is a good true old fashioned type welshie as people have said how much the welshes are changing, I got one comment saying he looked about 8 or 9 but hes actually 20! so I must be doing something right :)

yes I suppose so, I think this year im going to start competing more in dressage and sj and maybe try an ode. thanks for replying.

you defiantly cant show a welsh d hogged in m&m classes I find supreme show products mane and tail re builder is fantastic for growing a nice mane / tail and stinky stuff is also fantastic for stopping them from itching / rubbing.

welsh d's manes only need to be 4/5 inches long so if he is a good stamp of welsh d i would try and grow the mane
