Having got a bit into showing since Bruce started doing so well (!!!!)

I am totally freaked to learn that adults dress up as children when they show ridden mountain and morland...jhoddy boots the lot?

Why is this?

Not true in my experience, just stays the same, kids in jod boots adults in long boots. Where did you get that from?

I used to show my Welsh Cob in joddy boots when I was in my 30's. That was simply because I don't like long boots and have always ridden in short boots.

I am now in my mid-40's

and am about to start showing my current Sec D - also in joddy boots!

I believe either is correct with natives, although someone may know different.....?

I wear jodhphur boots under navy blue trousers so you wouldn't be able to tell if my boots were long or short. To be fair, I've never actually seen any adults dressed in jodhphurs and short boots with their hair in pigtails decorated with the same fancy bows as their pony is wearing. Maybe I'm going to the wrong sort of shows?

99% of adults wear long boots. I do occasionally wear short boots, but this is because I prefer them most of the time. You will never see me with pigtails at a show.

Most of the large natives and traditionals do seem to be ridden by teens and adults.

It depends on if your showing a big or small native....sec A's, B's, Dartmoors etc adults have to wear joddy boots. Sec C's, D's, Highlands etc adults wear long boots

At surrey county! And at local level by me there are a few who show in canary johddys with boots and clips! I find it a bit wierd...like they are dressing as kids on kids ponies? !

Why cant long boots be worn>!

I am not talking about in hand btw

PS and before I get shouted at for the kids ponies comment I am well aware that they are not kids ponies, it is when they are ridden by adults pretending to be kids?

You should wear long boots etc. on large breeds and short on small breeds. I don't personally think it's any more bizarre than the other random 'rules' for showing turnout.

Not sure what shows you lot go to but the norm is for adults riding small breeds to wear joddy boots and on large breeds to wear long boots. The grey area is the middle heights and riders will wear what they feel looks right on their pony. Children on large breeds usually wear long boots. Canary jods are cosidered the norm but I have only ever seen young children wearing ribbons and pigtails.

I wear long boots when showing my fell, as the others have said it's mainly children who wear joddy boots unless you're showing a small breed.

Long boots on a large breed, short boots on a small breed whatever the riders age.

There is no such thing as a "middle height" m&m. They are defined as large or small according to breed irrespective of size. Thus a New Forest is a large breed even if it's only 13hh.

Personally I think it's a bit freaky seeing an adult riding in short boots.

I have always worn long boots to show my native - even as a 14 year old, because I was so bloody tall and looked all spidery and odd in jod boots.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone over the age of perhaps 12 showing in jod boots (except for in hand classes, with trousers).

not true at all!!! i always wear long boots on my sec d......however it does depend on the pony, and long boots would look wrong on a section a, showing is about the overall picture, and tradition, IMHO some people who go SJ look quite as ridiculous!!!
