Hi,

At my lesson in a new school yesterday the R.I. wouldn't let me ride in the high rider II's because she said they are too 'chunky', could catch in the stirrups and their insurance wouldn't be valid because of this.

Has anyone else experienced this?? I've only had them a couple of months and don't particularly want to purchase different ones but I suppose I will have too - any recommendations on less 'chunky' ones?

Thanks.

Its nothing to do with the boots, and all to do with the stirrup irons. Simple solution buy yourself a pair of 4.75 inch irons and take those with you. She is correct in that you shoul dnot ride with boots that are too wide for your stirrup irons. You need a finger width at either side of your boot. So if you you buy your own irons, check they fit your boot then you just swap their narrow ones to your correct ones :)

I have been riding in High Riders for the last four years.

I have NEVER got caught in the stirrups and have done, hacking, XC, jumping, school work and fun rides (where you canter like a mad thing completely out of control).

I think you R.I. is being a little biased.

Neil the RI is not being biased IF the stirrups are 4inch ones. then it is dangerous to ride in the High riders as there is the potential to get stuck. The fact you have ridden in yours for years suggests that you have the correct size stirrups for your boots. the RI has to be sure that there is space in the stirrups to enable the boot to come out safely in the event of an accident. If in her opinion there is not room then she is correct in stating the OP cannot ride in them However what she should have done was provide wider stirrups. Simples

I agree Bosworth, but the OP did not say that the stirrups were too narrow, just that the RI thought the boots were too chunky.

I have size 8 boots and ride in bent leg 4 1/2" irons.

Agree with the others, new stirrups rather than boots, i am one of those that has had a 'stuck foot in stirrups and dragged' whilst wearing MH chunky boots and not wide enough stirrups:( I find the bent leg stirrups are even better, as even if the normal stirrups are wide enough if you fall in a unusual way, you can still get stuck.
