Hi everyone, we are an experienced horse owning family but have an issue with our new gelding which we have only had for 3 weeks and after some suggestions.
His ridden work is great and he has good manners on the ground. He is just 5 and was backed late I believe this spring. Our issue is that he rushes off in trot for a few paces when mounting. We take our time and he is not rushed. He is not moving towards other horses in fact he is sometimes moving away from them. We have tried leg up, mount from the ground but we have noticed he won't stand next to a mounting block.
We thought he was improving but on Friday tried to mount and he was worst he's been. No obvious triggers.
I'm planning to take him back to basics like I did with my other gelding when I backed him, and spend as long as it takes each day.. Ask him to stand by mounting block and correct him when he moves away. Make it nice for him to stand there and give him a scratch. Let him relax and then get him used to reins being picked up and foot in stirrup.
Please does anyone have experience of similar? Am I planning to do the right thing or are there other things I should try? He's a talented jumper and very mature in his attitude to ridden work but do want to sort this issue before we get him out and about more.
