mounting help

Does that even make sense. Michael Pearce has a video on you tube some where.

Obv when he does stand and let you on without moving a hoof, make sure he knows he is the best pony in the world.

Same problem here :( I started a new share three weeks ago. First time on ok but he immediately ran forwards then backwards:eek: next time I got legged up and he spooked big time..cue him dashing out of stable and me still lying across his back:eek::eek: I don't think that helped him much as weve now had two weeks of him shifting his butt across or reversing as soon as I get on the mounting block. When i did get on hed shoot forwards and when I stopped the forwards rush he would then reverse at speed. Not really a safe position to be in on a large fast horse.
We've been working on it.. Getting on and taking a few strides then back off on the wrong side etc. Trying to teach him to stay still when mounted..ex racehorse:rolleyes:
I've got him a better fitting saddle as the one I first rode him in was too wide and tipping and I'm sure it was hurting his back. I got on from the wrong side at third attempt on Thursday and again 3rd attempt yesterday from the correct side without him running away. It's by no means sorted though and as he's 16.2 I can't get on from the ground ..probably not safe anyhow as I'm sure he'd run if I tried. So a Work in progress and I've been going through the various videos on YouTube to get some hints. Hope you find someone to help Nah. Apart from it being a total pain to deal with it's potentially dangerous, least my case is.

Thank you FW.. Those videos are really useful and cover exactly what I need to work on. We will be doing lots of practice next week and I'm off to get some folding steps :D

Yes he is amazing still can't believe my mare got him off :(

Nah, do you see what I mean about quick back up and the thinking time? I thought it was Michael Pearce video on YouTube but its these ones (sorry maxwell if your reading this).

Wish you were closer would lend you my halter

I had the same issue as you, swinging back end out, move forward, move back

I got an RA out and we worked out that changing the side I got on helped the problem 70% and then we used clicker training and hey presto :D

With the clicker, you put the horse in position .. click treat..step on mounting block without them moving, click treat repeat a few times, then step on mounting block gather the reins..click treat (if does not move obviously) click treat get down, then repeat 3 or 4 times. Then get on mounting block, gather reins and put one foot in stirrup, click treat repeat a few times. Then get on mounting block, gather reins, foot in stirrup, mount click treat get off... repeat a few times and then stay on and ride. Although it sounds lengthy you can do it by yourself and be on within 15 mins if it goes well. You can then just do each step once before getting on the next day.

Timing is everything, click as soon as they do the process correctly but not if they move, just repeat if they move.
