Hiya

I have an injury to my left leg which prevents me from getting on board without the help of a good sized mounting block. (once I am up there I'm fine btw)

Problem is we are doing a pleasure ride this weekend (our first since my accident) and I am going to struggle getting on. I have been practicing this week with various contraptions (like ladders etc) but I am struggling and I end up twisting my knee and hurting my skin grafts. Normal mounting blocks just arnt big enough. I need something 50 - 70 cm high.

Typical for me, I have left it last minute - I can get a proper mounting block delivered tomorrow but it is going to cost £100.

Please get your thinking caps on and come up with an idea to help me get on then Cinderella can go to the ride

Could you practice mounting from the right maybe, if that's not how you do it anyway? At least if you can get the hang of it a little before the weekend it will see you through the pleasure ride.

Sorry if that doesn't help

I presume you have tried those little 2 step ladders from B&Q/Homebase? They are not expensive and do vary in size a little so you would hopefully be able to find one high enough Failing that, how about an old kitchen chair, would your leg allow you to step up onto that?

I don't know what you are travelling in or how good your horse is, but I always used to manoeuvre the horse up beside the ramp and clamber on from there.

I hope you get something worked out!

just drag my water carrier out and as when i get to places it's full it's pretty stable

kal, ask someone with a horsebox there if they mind you using the steps to their living as a mounting block. that's what i do with mine, and have done at events when i was a long way from my box and had to get back on. as long as you ask nicely i'm sure they won't mind.
the top step is usually about 2' off the ground, or if some kind person shut the steps and you stood in the living doorway as they brought your horse to you, you'd be even higher.

Is mounting from the wrong side possible? I know some people just can't do it and other seem to be fine with it either way. A leg from the wrong side or a step ladder with the handles hacksawed off (as they are really rather dangerous near the horse)

Woody - I have tried the step ladders but the only ones I can find that are tall enough thend to have handle things on the top.

Just a point - reading this back, I sound like a right old crock who shouldn't be riding but actually I'm not.

My left leg just isn't strong enough yet to pull myself up. Once I'm up there everything is fine. I have been back in the saddle on my handsome new cob for 3 months, riding 5 times a week. My lad is worth his considerable weight in gold for the way he looks after me.

use your right leg....

i always dismount on the off-side now since i smashed up my right leg 32yrs ago..

i adapted to what i was comfortable doing

Kal40, yes but when I have used them, I turned them sideways on to the horse and the handle at the top did not interfere.

How frustrating, there must be something you can use...have to get you on board somehow! It would be such a shame to miss out for the want of a suitable mounting block.

Mother to the rescue. She has been away at the other end of the county today and called into a DIY store she happened to pass on the way and hey presto - she found a larger set of step ladders with a small handle at one side.

Hip hip hooray for Ma.

Thanks for all the suggestions though. Saved me £100
