my horse wont stand still for mounting - he pivots away or backs up. Have someone holding him but have to spend about 15 mins settling him then can get on wiv no prob & hes fine once im on. I use a mounting block, have tried lunging him 1st to take some fresh off him, have a new saddle properly fitted. getting a bit cheesed off now. Help.

Have you had his back checked?
Also being 'properly fitted' isn't always a guarantee that there is no discomfort from the saddle, sadly.
I would be thinking about back issues as unwilling to be mounted, and running backwards is often a clear indicator that something is wrong.
Good luck in solving the problem!

Presuming Back and Saddle are checked and good…..

There are no quick fixes just practice. How is he if you mount (eventually) then get off and do it again? I only ask because my lad is better the 2nd time he is mounted.

You need to spend a hour (or more) getting on and off and giving him lots and lots of praise when he stands still. You could even take it back a stage and just practice putting your foot in the stirrup then taking it out, then putting your foot in and transferring your weight and finally getting on but do each stage a lot. I would make sure you do all this practicing when you don’t have to be anywhere else then your horse wont pick up on you rushing to mount.

Just a thought how is he for others to mount him, my lad is great for others it is only me he moves for and that is because I hesitate when mounting because I expect him to move.

I have been through it and my lad is 18hh so it is a leap of faith getting on at the best of times.

Good luck and persevere.
