Ive been having a few problems with my horse on the right rein for a little while now, hes been very resistant at times or shaking his head, and has on occasion felt bridle lame (I hate that term!). He has been completely unwilling to bend right, trying to get him to turn off the wall on the right rein on a few occasions was impossible. Everything went through my head that could be wrong, from his hind legs, to my hands, to his bit not fitting, to his saddle
Anyway, the dentist discovered a big lump in his mouth last week that sits sort of upwards of the corners of his mouth and on the inside of his lip, a small portion of the lump would sit over his bit. To get a good feel you really need to grab his upper lip and its not at all visible from the outside. The vet was out at the beginning of the week and she found a tiny hole in the lump and upon squeezing it, pus came out! So we have an abscess and either an entry or exit wound! Not much came out of it and it appears to be a big fibrous lump now more than anything but she cut a small hole in the hope that it will drain and whatever has punctured it in the first place will hopefully come out if it hasnt already! He is also on 5 days of antibiotics and should be able to get back on in about a week. Explains a lot, and definitely explains all the problems Ive had recently when riding!
Has anyone got any experience of mouth abscesses, how they are caused and how they heal? The vet thinks my boy has munched on a small thorn and it has become embedded in his lip? Is there any way anything else could have cause this? His bit perhaps? Hes in a Sprenger KK Ultra. The vet said 100% there is no way his bit will have caused him any discomfort and we definitely have a tiny puncture which ties i with him munching on something he shouldnt, which is a relief but Im a worrier!
Thanks for reading! Any advice would be appreciated!
