mouth problems

Hi all,

First post so please be nice...

My OH has a horse who continually has mouth problems - whenever she is in work she develops cuts (looking like paper cuts) in both corners. It's quite clear that she is in a bit of pain from these and so she can't be in work for long before having a rest. We've tried various bits with no success, and I wonder whether anyone else has had similar problems, or indeed, any advice?

I'm not very good at this sort of thing but it could be that the bit is rubbing her or that is possibly done up too tight.
There should (usually) be 2-4 'smile lines' (Creases) and if there are too few or too less you may need to considering altering the cheekpieces.

Really not too sure though, they would have been my initial thoughts anyway.

Have you tried dohnuts or whatever they are called, rubber rings, that go on the edge of the bit?

i use rubber bit guards and if looks at all sore vasaline helps ps im not strong handed he just a baby

My horse has this problem, unfortunately once the mouth is sore it is often likely to reoccur, some suggestions:
1) Make sure you always clean your bit.
2)Vaseline acts as a good lubricant.
3) Happy mouths are likely to irritate it.
4)Make sure the creases of your horses mouth are clean, before riding.
5) Aloe Vera Gel is good at healing cracks.
6) Always have a hackamore to hand, incase it gets really bad.
7) Bit guards are unlikely to help.

Many thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. Lots of ideas - we've tried the bit guards with no success. We'll go away and try the others but if anyone has any other possible solutions I'd be delighted to hear them!

Has anyone come across the Myler combination bits - might they help?
