Hi,
I discovered what looks like an ulcer on my young horse about 2 weeks ago.
Its about 1.5cm in diameter, completely circular and is on the inside of his lip.

I have tried to post a photo (fingers crossed it works)

I expected it to heal by itself but 2 weeks on and its no better. Has anyone's horse had one before, did it need vet treatment?

I'm going to email the photo to my vet and see what he suggests but would some bonjela in the meantime be worth a go do you think?

Thanks for reading

Seen something like this before in a vet book so just been searching and Ive found it. Your picture is very small so it may not be the same thing but the picture in the book shows a round red circular patch on the horses lip area/muzzle. The circular lesion looks red with and is surrounded by what looks like a pailer ring. It says its probably caused by the larvae of the bot fly haemorroidalis entering the lip. There is nothing else said apart from dose with an effective wormer. You may have the book, its The complete Equine Veterinary Manual by Tony & Marcy Pavord.

Ewwwww ....

thank you Louby, the description you've given does fit (if you click on the piccie it should go bigger)

I dosed him with pramox last week so hopefully that will fix things, will email the piccie to my vet and to the company that does my worm counts to see if they can suggest anything further

Our pony split the sides of its mouth at a sj competition a couple of weeks ago ... I spoke to our vet to see whether there was an "equine version of bonjela" that might help with the healing. He recommended Preperation H, which you can get from Boots Pharamacy or similar, as a gel or cream ( go for the gel). It is actually a treatment for hemeroids, but well know for its soothing and healing properties, and apparantly used a lot by showjumpers. It did the job for us, and certainly won't do any harm. Good luck

Thicky me!! Never been a strong point these computers. It does look very similar although the inner bit looks redder in the book. It sounds yucky doesnt it but Im sure if it is this then its nothing bad as the book doesnt make anything of it and you know what some books are like, they can scare you half to death.

My horse (aged 11) had a whacking great big mouth ulcer just where you describe which took about a month or so to disappear. I was using Bonjela and Vitamin C tablets which seemed to do the trick as it has just about gone now.
