Hi

I moved my horse yards on Saturday 14th Dec, hes only been there 5 days at moment. He would eat hay in his previous yard but now gets a mixture of hay and haylage.

He is fed Dengie Hi Fi Molassess Free, NAF Garlic Granules, NAF Biotin and Codlivine all round supplement. He has been on this for past 6 months and seemed to love it. But now moved to new yard he wont eat it.

I have asked that he gets hay only (no haylage) to see if he will eat his feed.

I am going to make it up tonight in his old green bucket to see if he will eat it. He would normally bang the door watching me make his feeds up at previous yard as if to say hurry up mum lol. The staff at yard are currently making his feeds up.

Any ideas? x x

As said on your other post.

He is probably filling up on haylage, he is on a new yard, and just needs time to settle!

Keep calm and im sure he will be fine.

Should try having a TB that eats only when she fancies, hay, haylage or hard feed!

I wouldn't worry... Mine have periods where they don't want their bucket feeds, e.g. if on a fresh paddock. With one of my mares it's a bit more serious as she HAS to have one of her supplements otherwise she tries to die (!!) but missing a few days wouldn't hurt her. He'll eat it if he wants it.

Hi, I had one that was a bit fussy, and whenever he went off food I would halve it. He was just wasting it anyway, but when there was only half in the bucket he seemed to not be over-faced and eat more. You could also slice carrots to tempt him into the bucket.
If it does not resolve in a week or so mix the feed with a bit of sugar beet water, just to add a nice taste.
I would also make sure your horse has a quiet time to eat, he may be stressed if there is another horse overlooking at feed time, or kicking at the adjoining wall. Also check the feed room for cleanliness.
TBH I would only worry if he starts to lose weight, the haylage may be all he needs.

Lots of horses prefer haylage to their bucket feeds. I have one here that I have to feed only when she is out of haylage in the morning and not put any in until she's eaten her hard feed (with her meds).

So guys...

Last night i made up his feed and didnt put any supplements in it. It was just HiFi Molassess free and water, the way i usually make it. He still didnt eat it. I hung about the stable with him, left him in peace, added more water to it...but still he didnt eat it. He nibbled a tiny bit and smelt it but that was about it. He just moved over to his hay. Then i thought, i wonder if he is smelling something from their feed buckets (im full livery so there is sharing of buckets). I am going to go get his usual green one today from previous farm (kept stable on just incase lol) to see if that helps. I will make his feed up again tonight. He is eating his hay/halage (hes not too fussed on the haylage) and is drinking his water. I am clueless. Folk have suggested adding sugarbeet to his feeds but dont think he is in enough work yet to require more energy but want him to get the supplements....mmm. He eats his carrots and is still trying to mug me for scooby snacks haha.

Just leave him be, stop messing with his feeds!

Feed him as you have "normally" done and leave the horse to it, he doesn't have any major meds does he? He is quite happy in himself its just you that isn't happy?
He will eat when he wants.

PS I would not be happy to be sharing buckets, im on full livery mon-fri and all our horses have their own buckets.

Thanks for advice guys. Hopefully he will settle in soon. Yeah going to continue feeding as normal n hopefully he will go back to his old eating habits.

I moved my boy on 1st Dec and he has only just started eating properly again within this last week. I think it is the stress of a new situation, new routine, new friends etc etc. My horse isn't really a foodie anyway but I just cut it right down so that he wasnt overwhelmed with too much food and also it wasnt being wasted. Once he started eating again, we started increasing it back to what he was on. Yes he dropped off and yes, there were a few days where I was really worried about him but he is now all but returned to his old self. Give your boy some time to settle and get used to his new surroundings and I'm sure he will be fine. All the best.
