Has anyone here got experience of living in other countries? A friend is fed up with the tax/benefit/laws/rules in this country and how they seem to reward the wrong people. Shes serioulsy thinking of moving to a country with better
laws/rules/taxes/systems etc.

Has anyone done this?

Where did you go?

What is there to think about?

As a horse owner she does not want to give up her horse so the place also has to be a nice country for horses and one she can travel her mare to easily.

Any advice appreciated.

I did it, I moved to Norway. I have started two businesses here and managed to mostly learn the language.

6 years on life is ok, moving again but to a smaller farm (more a small holding) further down south as being located on an island is not the best for the business which has grown beyond our expectations, child with special needs will have access to more help and our current farm is also too big for our needs now.

I moved here with horses also. Be happy to help any way I can and share my experiences.

I have lived in several different countries but for very different reasons than those of your friend.

If she would like a country with lower tax/less social security she could move to the US. But keep in mind, if anything goes wrong, she might not get any benefits or any other assistance ;-)

I am not sure what you mean by "wrong people". I think one of the groups that people often put on that list is immigrants? If that is so, keep in mind that if she moves to another country where she does not hold citizenship, she might herself become one of the "wrong people"?

I think most people in the UK (as in many other nice countries) don't realise how good life is here.

Haha if the person is not happy with the amount of tax she pays, surely Norway won't be the best place to go. It is one of the most expensive countries in the world - and has even more benefits than here.... ;-)

Well yes VAT is set at 25% and a slightly higher tax on wages, VAT is on everything but for that you get amazing healthcare and a government that looks after you should you need it. We pay a higher tax on our company but we would also get this in the UK also as we would be in a high tax bracket.

Minimum wage is at least £10.00 per hour also.

I like Norway, it is a safe country and I like the family mentality.

My post was not a 'come to Norway' post but more this is my experience, I might be able to think of things that may not have been thought of post.

I would suggest that maybe she visits one of the Ex-pat forums and has a chat on there to get an idea from a lot of people. Shipping a horse is the easy part of the equation.

I am an immigrant. ANY country one moves to has rules and regulations, there is no getting away from them, they have to be there, some are better, some not, it is all a question of personal opinion.

My parents moved away a decade ago, I have a brother living abroad too, we all love our respective adopted countries, enjoy our lives and have no intention of returning to our homeland, but it doesn't mean that everything is rosier from our side of the fence. Britain has an awful lot going for it that isn't necessarily appreciated - the grass is always greener and all that.

I live in Switzerland at the moment but pay for my horse to remain on livery in the UK as the number of hours I work and my snowy location would make it pretty hard for me to give him the time he needs out here.
Lifestyle and pay are much better- tax not an awful lot different. Less crowded than the UK, and people are more polite. Whole country just generally more civilised. I miss my home country, but can't see myself moving back there for any length of time.
