Hi.
I have one horse and do dressage with him. Recently I have been teaching Travers and has led to us doing a little bit of half pass. He already does leg yield. I have in my head that horses move towards weight from the seat bones. I. e. To keep themselves underneath them but I've found when alternating between leg yield and half pass that my horse is very much the opposite. Shift of weight and he changes direction. I try to sit as straight as possible but from photos it's obvious I sit to one side a little in these movements.
Simple question is..... have I inadvertently taught my horse to react in the wrong way and need to go back a stage to correct or actually is this fine and just need to straighten up and have seat aids more subtle. (I have lessons with a good instructor just not as frequent as I like.)

I would usually expect them to travel in the direction of weight, but I have also found that every horse is a little different. Personally I don't think it matters if you are the only one riding your horse all that matters is that it is obedient to your aids so I would just try to sit straighter and be more subtle. You may find that when you do that he does move to stay under your weight. If you have been over exaggerating he may be moving the other way because it is uncomfortable

I think when he learnt leg yield it was such a struggle that I definitely over exaggerated my aids. We have improved a lot with leg yield by concentrating on being straight. I think if I try to change my weight aids now I will completely confuse him so will just aim for subtlety
