Hi all. After some thoughts…

Yard A I’m currently on:
Pros: it’s cheap compared to what’s in the area. out 24/7 in summer. Herd turnout (horse 1 (of 2) cannot do individual, she paces). They all go out together in winter, so assisted turnout at no extra cost. People tend to bring in late which fits with work. 1 net of haylege is included in winter (the prices go up in winter compared to summer but very reasonable). The school is inside so good in winter if you’re a wuss like me. Nice sized stables. Cheap savings available onsite. It’s close, 4 miles away, 11mins.

Cons: A mess! Not kept tidy. Always a posts about gates being left open (runaway herd) or literal shit being left around. Shit in the field so horses get injured. 8-8 visiting times unless emergency (I work a 8:30 till sometimes half 6). Reliant on whichever livery decides to do jobs that year if I need help when I work away. School is dusty in summer, unusable sometimes and unbearable when it’s been dry. No rug change before turnout.

Background: I have struggled with my mental health for a few years. Really want to start riding again regularly. May start working away a few days a week.

Yard B:
Pros: all the help you can get from the yo (paid for). Option to keep one on grass livery and one on diy then swap with the seasons (tb does better in at night during winter, cob is fat so does better in during the day in summer but can stay out, or the both can go on grass livery). Outdoor school being built this year. Indoor school albeit small. Group turnout (but if everyone comes in before I finish work it’s more expense as stress head will need bringing in too). Yo is lovely and I’ll have people to ride with at the weekend.

Cons: 20 mins, 9 miles away. More expensive plus extra for turnout and rug change and bits (I couldn’t go twice a day). No haylege or bedding included.

Yard A initially sounds really good.....BUT, the chaos. I don't think I could deal with that level of mess and laziness, and a YO who doesn't seem to care about it. Consistent and predictable makes everything much more enjoyable for me (particularly when my mental health is suffering a bit anyway), and I wouldn't want to be worrying about my horses injuring themselves on rotten tractors etc, or getting out if some tool leaves the gate unlatched.

If you have the money for yard B I would go for that. Higher standards, reliable help, reliable hacking buddies.

If you're going to be constantly worrying about money on Yard B then I'd consider ways to make Yard A work for you, including perhaps finding a reliable local freelancer.

It is a stress… did the calcs over a year, inc bedding and hay yard B is £79.50 a month extra (that’s including weekend turnout so only one trip at weekends and not including the extra hay and bedding I’d have to buy at yard A for when they stay in in crap weather which I can’t cost up)

Yard A is cheap and convenient, but the mess, safety risks, and lack of support might stress you more especially with your mental health and work schedule. Yard B is pricier and further, but the extra help, better care options, and social riding could make it worth it if you can budget for the added costs. If riding regularly matters, Yard B’s reliable setup might suit you better long-term.

As long as you are not changing the worry of safety for the worry of money I would go for yard B. worrying about money can really topple your/our mental health without us really realising it has an impact.

Yard A sounds like my yard. You have to get together with your fellow liveries and do your own cleaning and repairs. We mend fences, have just completely refenced 200 feet, fix our own stables and keep the yard clean and tidy. In return, our rent is cheap. If you don't want to do that, then yard B may suit you better.

Be aware that many livery yards will be hiking their prices this year. Hay/haylage crops are well down due to the weather so prices will go up. Also staff costs have gone up massively with increased NI and minimum wage so build this into your budget.
